Sutlej River, Punjab
Travelled almost 5000 miles to fulfil my grandmother’s final wish, which was for her ashes to be scattered at Kiratpur Sahib.
There are famously Five Rivers of Punjab with the Sutlej River being the longest. This particular river passes through Gurdwara Patalpuri Sahib, which is considered a sacred site for many Sikhs as a number of Gurus were cremated there and had their ashes immersed in the very same river.
I don't consider myself to be religious but my Grandma was a devoted Sikh. Carrying out her final wish gave me a huge sense of comfort and closure as I said my final goodbyes, whilst also feeling like it was the beginning of her spiritual journey in the way that she believed.
To the woman who taught me how to love and how to be loved. I'm so lucky to have grown up with you in our family home, you raised every single one of your grandkids as if they were your own. It never felt right to call you Grandma, it was always Big Mum or Mum.
You were my number one, my muse and forever inspiration. I used to take photographs of you all the time and you'd pretend to hate it but I knew deep down you loved it really. I'd try and explain to you that you had your own little fan club, that people you'd never even met adored you and your infectious smile and that they'd always ask about you. You'd laugh and shake your head and tell me to shut up but that was the lasting effect you had on people.
I would never tire of being by your side and I will miss our little inside jokes and sitting by your armchair whilst you shared your countless words of wisdom. It was so hard to watch you lose your sparkle but I will always hang on to those good times.
My heart is full knowing how many people showed up for you to say their final goodbyes, you had a heart of gold and it's no surprise you were loved by so many. I can only hope to be half the woman you were and carry with me the strength you had. You were my best friend and I'm going to miss you so much. Thank you for everything.
I love you Big Mum, rest easy 🕊️🤍
