"Does God look down on the boys in the barroom?
Mainly forsaken but surely not judged.
Jacks, Kings and Aces, their faces in wine.
Do Lord, deliver our kind" - Robert Hunter
Legend #3.
This look was axed from the last gig I did with Phil McCauley so these pics have never seen the light of day. I'm posting this today because it's a good image but more so because it so effectively describes a McCauley shoot day. All of it. Also, it's the last picture I took of this dude. I saw Phil only once after this; in Italy. I was leaving, he had just arrived. We had a day overlap. We hung out in the hotel lobby and made plans for drinks that night. I stupidly bailed on those plans and I regret that decision.
I'm glad to have been his friend all these years. It was always fun to ride up front with McCauley - he knew everyone.
He will be missed by all of them.
Legend 2. An outtake from the last shoot I did with Phil McCauley. We brought are own brook trout for this shot (obviously). When we were wrapped and I was packing up my gear some local farm-hand dudes came down to the river with their rods to do some fly fishing. When they saw Phil standing in the river they just stared at him; with his tweed cap, bow tie and waders, his expert cast, vintage creel basket and SIX brook trout lined up neatly on the river bank. They didn't know WHAT they were looking at. Eventually one of them walked over to me and said "Wow, this guy's really good, eh?" I didn't have the heart to tell him what was really going on so I said "yeah bro, he's the best!" Fuck, we laughed about that all afternoon.
