Using found objects that the tide or people have left behind, Paul Anderson MacPhail creates sculptures, giving these objects a second life, a quiet resurrection.
Often there is a surreal quality to the images: passing figures appear within the frame, their presence disrupting familiar visual narratives, shifting our perceptions. The inversion of scale is seductive, presenting an alternate and almost dream-like space.
The process of making is important: the observation of the overlooked, the creation, the balance, the strength or fragility.
His work is transient; the structures he makes will be reclaimed by the tides, the images becoming the memory.
These âmemoriesâ suggest a sense of simplicity and calmness, a reflective and mindful engagement with our environment and with each other.
