Together with handloom weaver Shaktivel Seenuvasan, a purist who learned the craft from Argentine weaver Dara Lorenzen in the spiritual enclave of Auroville, we designed a very limited edition of blankets and pillowcases for the Souks! We drew inspiration from the Madras check: a traditional South Indian pattern once worn by the working class, later carried across the globe through Dutch and British trade. By magnifying the pattern to an extreme scale, abstract colour fields emerge, shifting and merging during the weaving process. Like paint on canvas, colours transform the moment they meet. Last days to see Paul Beumer’s stunning solo exhibition! • Still open on 9, 10, 11 and 12 April! • It is the first time Beumer has ventured into the realm of batik, a traditional wax-resist dyeing technique used to create intricate patterns on textiles. Batik is primarily associated with Indonesian (Javanese) culture, but is also practiced on Sri Lanka, where Beumer regularly resides for research and collaborations with textile artisans. • Paul Beumer The dinosaurs, 2026 batik on cotton 180 x 140 cm • @paulbeumerpaul #paulbeumer #batik #srilanka

For this collaboration, Paul Beumer designed a small collection especially for The Souks. It’s been really special to see the first blankets already finding their way into people’s homes. We’ve made a few people very happy with them, which means a lot. A few pieces are still available. Thank you for the support and for giving these pieces a place in your homes. 🤍 @paulbeumerpaul

Dürst Britt & Mayhew; Paul Beumer – Show me – What lies beyond the hills and the mountains and the earth?

ௐ Bhikshatana Murti is the form of Shiva as the supreme mendicant or divine beggar. Usually naked, representing the breaking of worldly bonds, yet adorned with ornaments like snakes and accompanied by an attendant and a small deer. Bhikshatana uses Brahma's skull as a kapala (skull cup) as his begging bowl, signifying the penance for severing Brahma's head. Brahma, who is the creator God, created a woman named Shatarupa. She was so beautiful that Brahma became completely infatuated with his creation and followed her wherever she went, creating his multiple heads. Shatarupa became desperate and began to jump to try to escape his gaze. This prompted Brahma to sprout yet another head on top of the others in order to keep her in sight. Brahma had given into the cravings of the flesh and abandoned the work of the soul. Shiva admonished Brahma and chopped off his fifth head as punishment. Brahma's skull is carried around by Bhikshatana as a memento mori, 'you must die'. To attain absolute wisdom, one must confront the ego. One must familiarize oneself with its hollownesss, its mortality, and its hideousness. Ego is not something to be ignored, nor blindly renounced. It's something to be understood. Only than to overcome. #bhikshatanamurti #hinduism #shiva #hindumythology #brahma

Show me - what lies beyond the hills and the mountains and the earth? 1 March - 12 April 2026 @durstbrittmayhew For my fifth solo exhibition at DürstBritt&Mayhew I ventured into the realm of batik, a traditional wax-resist dyeing technique used to create patterns on textiles. Batik is primarily associated with Indonesia, but is also practised in Sri Lanka, where I created this new body of work in collaboration with an artisan. For this new series of works, I studied and got myself inspired by the artistic practices of Janet Sobel and Jackson Pollock. Both Sobel and Pollock embraced the unconscious and intuitive way of making art within their painting practice. Their images are not organised but rather seem to be the residue of a shamanic rite in which movement and ritual are more important than creating a 'beautiful' image. #exhibition #contemporaryart #batik #painting #paulbeumer
