Bubble Tile (Museum Island)
Glazed ceramic, 2025.
Part of an ongoing series that blends a number of matte paintings made for a scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s Torn Curtain with Adolf Menzel’s The Iron Rolling Mill (Modern Cyclopes).
In Hitchcock’s film, the interior and exterior of Berlin’s Alte National Gallery is entirely simulated (and mostly invented) because filming was impossible at the location in East Berlin. Menzel’s painting is in the museum’s actual permanent collection and it also graces the cover of the penguin classic English translation of Marx’s Capital Volume 1.
