On Sunday 24 May, we are hosting a workshop, Image Observation and Garment Translation, in collaboration with artist Joke Robaard (11:00 - 17:30).  There are 6 workshop spots available. Fee: 15 euros. Sign up via: [email protected] This workshop will start with a presentation by Joke Robaard and will work from a selection of images from her archive ‘Archive Intersections’ of fashion and newspaper images and texts that she has collected since 1977 until the present.  Image Observation and Garment Translation is a workshop format developed by Pattern Place. In every workshop, participants are invited to draw patterns intuitively based on garments represented in fashion images. Intuitively made patterns are not intended to be precise and calculated shapes to be neatly assembled (like those in the fashion industry). Instead, intuitive pattern making is an invitation to reinterpret and adapt garments on fashion pages through one’s own body and perspective. There are 6 workshop spots available. Fee: 15 euros. Sign up via: [email protected] Location: @amsterdam.warehouse Warehouse Sint Jansstraat 51, Amsterdam Identity and graphic design @lejlavala Pattern Place is supported by @stimuleringsfonds

We’re happy to invite you to the official opening of Pattern Place, a project by @anouksbeckers and @alevvarisco grounded in a shared obsession for (paper) patterns. On Friday, 22 May, we are launching the first issue of PP magazine (18:00 - 21:00), with a talk at 19:00 by Pattern Place and graphic designer @lejlavala Moderated by Tanveer Ahmed. Pattern Place Magazine is a modular publication developed as part of this project. The magazine unfolds into a pattern made intuitively, accompanied by an introduction text about PatternPlace as a critical fashion project. The text explains how pattern making is a tactic and the pattern a tool that can be interpreted from a personal and intuitive perspective. This issue also publishes the text ‘Garment Resurrected - Zombies Deflected’ @femkedvrs and ‘Un-Mastering the Pattern’ by Tanveer Ahmed.  This first issue is published in 13 variations, all sharing a pattern made intuitively during a Pattern Place workshop @modestraat_amsterdam For this workshop, Image Observation and Garment Translation, we started with selecting images from the Vogue September issue 2025. These images were translated during the workshop into a set of paper patterns. Many thanks to: Ada, Ana, Bo, Brittany, Femke, Floortje, Lois, Mania, Nienke, Robin, Robin, Youngeun and Zeina.  Graphic design @lejlavala Pattern Place is made with the support of @stimuleringsfonds

What do you make of this? A dress In 1997 Rei Kawakubo published the sewing pattern of a garment from the Body Meets Dress, Dress Meets Body collection in issue no. 20 of Visionaire magazine curated by Comme des Garçons. The issue was published in a limited edition of 2800 copies. (For more info on Visionaire check out @saulmarcadent book “Publishing as Curating. Design and Imagery in Contemporary Fashion Magazines”, 2021) We have been so lucky to handle one of these issue; we traced the pattern and made the garment re-activating this archive content into a dress 🌟🌟 @anouksbeckers @alevvarisco

💖 We are happy to invite you tomorrow, Thursday 11 Dec, for the talk Image Observation and Garment Translation by @pattern.place with @alevvarisco & @anouksbeckers Pattern Place is a project by Alessandra Varisco & Anouk Beckers that comes from a shared obsession for paper patterns. It is a playground, a (counter)-archive and library of materials related to pattern making. It’s also a learning environment that is constantly re-activated by hosting workshops and other activities such as this talk at Warehouse projectspace:
Thursday 11 December 2025 Sint Jansstraat 51, Amsterdam
19:00 - 21:00
Talk: 19:30 During the talk Alessandra & Anouk will introduce Pattern Place and elaborate further on the workshop Image Observation and Garment Translation that they hosted on 6 Dec @modestraat_amsterdam . In this workshop, participants were invited to experiment with the method of intuitive pattern making to reveal and translate a garment represented in a fashion image into a paper pattern. The fashion images used in this workshop were collected from the Vogue September issue 2025.

Intuitive pattern making is a playful way of designing clothes whereby no specific level of knowledge and experience in pattern making is needed. With this approach, the project addresses topics such as representation of bodies, normative fit, measuring tapes and rulers as restrictive tools, authorship, creativity, skills and ways of making clothes. Poster design @lejlavala Pattern Place is generously supported by @stimuleringsfonds ✨

Intuitive Pattern making workshop @modestraat_amsterdam 🫶 We invited @femkedvrs for a presentation about the fashion magazine as myth-making-machine. We talked about the project A Magazine Reader, her research on text and animals in fashion media and about the distance between garments and real bodies in fashion magazines - making a jump to @pattern.place that restores and challenges the relation between the readers body and the represented garment. Asking us the question: ‘Photos of garments in fashion magazines aren’t real garments, as in; you can’t wear them… Or can you?’ Thank you Femke for sharing your inspiring ideas and critical reflections with us 💝 & many thanks for joining us in the workshop ✨ @anatomimori @zeina_alvarado @floortje_wijnands @robinia_kersten @brittanyt.design @przytulniee @tricot_de_bo @boshango @sohnyoungeun @doorloiz @femkedvrs and Nuno, Nienke, Ada & Robin!
