Have been immersed in Dan Simon’s “Ashland” for the past couple weeks.The storyteller of the novel sits behind several veils. One of the joys of reading this novel is trying to locate where the locus of the authorial voice resides. As an intergenerational accounting of a time and place, it is filled with tension and tragedy but all synthesized from a long view of life. A soothing heartbreak.

Today, from 2001, “Self-Promotion” which was a public intervention in Prague’s Old Town Square. Instead of using the sandwich board to advertise a product, these sandwich board wearers displayed a photograph of themselves. The catalogue accompanying MoMA’s Marcel Duchamp exhibition. The first US retrospective on Duchamp in 53 years! After seeing the exhibition the book is a great way to retrace the progression of the exhibition which is staggering in scope. Looking forward to seeing it again at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in October where the exhibition will include “Étant donnés” and “The Large Glass”.
