The Wexford Carol, one of the oldest surviving Christmas carols. Thought to have been written in Ireland in the 12th century but the melody may be much older, originally sung to celebrate the winter solstice. Happy solstice from the west of Ireland!

Ukrainian Folk Song Ой, у вишневому саду (Oh, in the Cherry Orchard). Storms have been raging here in the west of Ireland for days, but my thoughts are with our dear friends in Kyiv, Kharkiv and all of Ukraine today 🇺🇦 #ukraine #kyiv

Molly Malone for St. Patrick’s Day ☘️ Molly Malone is one that always seems to find its way back this time of year — simple, familiar, and easy to carry with you. I recorded this one at home, just as a quiet nod to the day that’s in it. Wishing you all a happy and gentle St. Patrick’s Day, wherever you are 🇮🇪

I’m excited to announce my upcoming solo cello concert — an evening of music, stories, and reflection. Over the past few years, many of you have joined me (online and in person) outside my family’s stone cottage here in Mayo. Now, I’m bringing that same spirit to the stage — exploring the cello’s depth and emotion through classical music, traditional Irish melodies, and some of my own compositions. I’ll be sharing the stories behind the music too — about home, the natural world, and the way joy and sorrow often live side by side here in the west of Ireland. The cello has always felt to me like a voice that can say what words cannot — tender, raw, and powerful all at once. I can’t wait to share that voice with you in person. 📍 The Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, Co. Mayo 📅 Friday January 30th 8pm 🎟️ Tickets: Linenhall Website

Out here by the cottage this morning, after another burst of Atlantic rain, a rainbow stretched across the sky — bright, fleeting, and full of promise. Nisha sat beside me, her ears twitching at the wind, and for a moment everything — the fields, the waves, the far-off light — seemed to rest in quiet balance. I couldn’t help but think of Ireland this week, and the feeling that something is beginning to turn. So much of what’s best about this country — its kindness, its courage, its fairness — is found not in power or noise, but in the steady, independent hearts that hold to what’s right. Watching that rainbow fade into the western light, I thought of Catherine Connolly, and the rare honesty she’s brought to Irish public life. Win or lose, her voice has reminded many of us of what true leadership can sound like — thoughtful, independent, rooted in care for people and place. Maybe the rainbow was just a coincidence. Or maybe, as often happens in Ireland, it was a small whisper from the land itself — a reminder that hope can still surprise us, that decency still matters, and that change, when it comes, often begins quietly. From the west of Ireland — wishing everyone a weekend of light after the rain 🌈🐕🇮🇪
