Sad to read that Choreographer Ben Stevenson has died. The first dance images I ever made, in 1993, were of his production of The Nutcracker for English National Ballet. I was on the stage crew for ENB and started taking pictures from the wings. The image of the cannon blast was the first image I took and the marketing department bought it. I had a few goes at it. In those days of manual exposure, transparency film plus no motordrive I kept missing the blast so in the end I shut my eyes and did it off the sound. The dancer slightly out of place also helped reveal the flash! May the force be with you Ben. You helped kickstart a career in theatre photography.

MATZ SKOOG 1957-2026
I am very sad to hear that Matz Skoog has died. Such a lovely man and a wonderful dancer. I remember touring to Athens with ENB where they performed Christopher Bruce’s Swan Song. I photographed him a few times over the years. He is still the only director who stopped a dress rehearsal so I could take set up shots of Nutcracker!!
Rest in peace dear Matz.
