Rockabilly (ローラ族) mask. The Japanese Rockabilly sub culture is an idea I’ve always wanted to explore in my art work. I’ve never felt creativity exists in a vacuum so I thought it was so interesting when something that is so uniquely American making its way to Japan where they in turn put their own twist to it. When sculpting this mask I drew heavily from one of the coolest Japanese Rockabillies out there, Johnny Daigo @johnny_daigo !! Raijin (雷神), god of thunder in Japanese mythology and Buddhism. One of the purposes for my most recent trip to Japan was to refuel my creative vessel and get in touch with my cultural roots to help inspire my fine art work. Upon visiting Sanjusangendo (三十三間堂) in Kyoto and seeing the incredible sculpture work on display there I was immediately awestruck. Nai Khanom Tom (นายขนมต้ม) This was a small (1/6 scale?) study as a proposal for a much larger figure for a local Muay Thai gym. In Thailand the name Nai Khanom Tom is synonymous with Muay Thai and is a revered figure in the martial art, often being seen in statue form in front of many Muay Thai gyms. This was such a refreshing change of pace to do something more in the vein of fine art as I’m often sculpting creatures for my day job.
