What do termites, onions, and Velcro all have in common? Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of joining a fellow panel of expert communicators on stage at @_innovationzero 2025. I shared my early childhoods inspirations as well as my thoughts on the power of science storytelling and effective communication. I also offered insights into my recent learnings around marketing and how as change-makers we can use those lessons to build a more sustainable, inspired future. It’s a journey that’ll takes you from: 🧅 Extracting DNA from onions 🌱 Sticky seeds that became Velcro® 🐜 Termites that inspired a self-cooling building 🧠 …to the psychology of empathy marketing the ‘pleasure-pain principle’ 🍿 Ready to dive in? 📺 Watch the full conversation on my YouTube channel NOW. 👉 https://youtu.be/HryW6NvY6cM

Some billion-dollar ideas start w/ curiosity. Others… start with a dog walk 🐕 From children’s shoes and book bags, to astronaut suits and high-tech equipment, the story behind this nature-inspired invention will have you shook. In the 1940s, a Swiss engineer named George de Mestral loved hiking with his dog in the Alps. Each time they returned home though, their clothes and fur were covered in sticky burr seeds. Most people would’ve just brushed them off and moved on with their day. But George did something different. He got curious. Under a microscope, he noticed something remarkable. Each burr was covered in tiny hooks that clung perfectly to the loops in his trousers, and his dog’s fur. That small discovery sparked one of the most profitable examples of biomimicry in history. George used nature’s simple hook-and-loop design to invent his own “Velour and Crotchet” fastening system that would one day reach outer space… VELCRO® Today, the Velcro brand generates over $1 billion a year. All thanks to some sticky seeds, a little curiosity, and a walk with a dog. 🎤 @_innovationzero

Every communicator has an origin story. Mine went from onions, to Attenborough. Let me explain. My journey into science storytelling started at my after-school science club. One overcast winter evening, we learned how to extract DNA… from an onion! 🧅 My mind was blown! For the first time, science felt real. Tangible. And, well… cool. That spark set me on a path, from studying Cancer Biology to earning a master’s in Science Communication… …and eventually becoming a tea-making runner for music videos, daytime TV shows, and, finally, wildlife documentaries. Those early jobs taught me the power of observation: watching legends like Steve Backshall, Gordon Buchanan, and, of course, the legend himself, Sir David Attenborough, in action. I worked on three of Sir David’s series, including ‘60 Years in the Wild’. That experience taught me something priceless: When we communicate clearly, and tap into that joyful, childlike curiosity, science starts to feel more like a portal. A gateway, into a magical world full of possibilities✨ That’s what I strive to help people experience now. Whether I’m up on stage, on the big screen, or creating books and audios, my goal is always that same: Bottle up the wonder of how the world works, and turn it into stories that help people feel alive. What’s your “lightbulb moment”? 💡 📍 @_innovationzero

Want to change hearts & minds? ♥️🧠 The world’s top online marketers might just have the answer. In conservation and sustainability, we often think we need slick campaigns, cinematic websites, and high-budget videos to make an impact. But impact doesn’t come from looking polished. It comes from understanding people. ‘Direct Response Marketing’ is all about connection that drives action. It’s about learning what your audience truly cares about. Meeting them where they are. And giving them a simple next step – no side quests 🎯 Because sometimes, the thing our audience wants… isn’t what we think they want. For me, discovering this concept of Direct Response Marketing has been a complete game-changer. I learned about this from brilliant teachers like @russellbrunson , @myrongolden , and @seancannell of @officialthinkmedia . And what I’ve realised is this: Great storytelling and direct-response marketing aren’t opposites; they’re partners. A good story, helps people to feel. But a great message, helps them to take inspired action. 🎤 @_innovationzero

Ever had the perfect idea, but no one listened? We’ve all been there. You have a brilliant, solution-focused idea for a big problem. You finally drum up the courage to share an idea with your team, your client, or even a friend... ...and then, BAOW! 💥 It gets dismissed before it’s even had a chance to land. Super frustrating, right? But let’s go a bit deeper. Here’s what usually happens. → The other person misses out on something that could’ve genuinely helped them. → f it’s at work, your project or client might even suffer because of it. → And you, well, you’ve left feeling unseen, unheard and undervalued. So, what’s really going on? It’s not that your idea isn’t good – it’s that you’ve jumped straight to the solution before highlighting the problem (I’ve done this so many times, lol). That’s where one of my favourite communication hacks comes in: P.A.S. Problem → Agitate → Solution Here’s how it works: 1️⃣ Problem ↳ Start by clearly naming the challenge your audience is facing. ↳ Use questions that invite them to confirm or describe it in their own words — this builds instant connection and credibility. 2️⃣ Agitate ↳ Make it real (with empathy). Highlight the cost of not solving it, and help them feel what’s truly at stake. ↳ Ask what impact this issue has on them or their team. Their answer gives you emotional depth and direction. 3️⃣ Solution ↳ Now reveal your fix — the thing that brings relief, clarity, or opportunity. ↳ Make sure it directly addresses the pain points they’ve just shared. That’s what makes it resonate. And guess what? You’ve just experienced PAS in action. This post began with a problem, then it built the tension, and finally it offered you a solution. That’s PAS in motion. Whether you’re writing an email, pitching an idea, or inspiring sustainable change - it’s simple, powerful, and it works. So, here’s my challenge to you: Give PAS a try the next time you want to communicate a solution-focused idea. P.S. – Feel free to practise it with me in the comments 💬 🎤 @_innovationzero
