The Craft of Movie Design. When a film is green lit, the Art Department is among the first to be hired to help shape the Director’s visual story. Their work begins with collages of ideas - location photos, sketches and research from classic films - to capture the film’s look and tone. Once the Director approves a general direction, the team moves to drafting sets, designing graphics and creating the details that bring each scene to life. Great designs blends so seamlessly into the story that audiences rarely notice the craft behind it. The exhibit highlights the creative collaborations and the artistry that built the world of La La Land.
