CANDICE MADEY is pleased to present âAutofictionsâ, an exhibition of five artists working in photographyâDarrel Ellis, LibuĹĄe JarcovjĂĄkovĂĄ, Abby Robinson, Gail Thacker, and Ann Weathersbyâon view through May 22, 2026.
These artistsâ works blur the boundaries between documentary and fiction while playfully exploring gender dynamics and genres of portraiture and self-portraiture. Each of the artists in âAutofictionsâ is highly experimental, creating narrative through unexpected processes, structures, and acute emotional resonance.
Gail Thacker, known for her staged and playful Polaroid portraits of performers from New Yorkâs downtown scene in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, presents new work that pushes the alchemical possibilities of Polaroid film. Thackerâs friend, artist Christen Clifford, poses in a classically inspired stance with a bow and arrow, evoking mythological female warriors such as Artemis, goddess of the wild, animals, and the hunt, as well as the Amazon queen Lampedo, a pagan heroine renowned for her archery and martial prowess.

Missing Stanley. One real thing about this dear friend is he actually gave a shit. Too much eyeliner or not, my girlfriend always gave me love & his handmade chains for my wrist & neck. Stanley had a lot of love for many. Great people are like that. They make you feel special. When it was really Stanley that was the special diamond.
