Journey into the Hadhramaut: from the sun drenched port of Mukalla, where salty breeze breath stories of the ancient Frankincense trade, to the vertiginous cliffs of Wadi Daw’an, dotted with terraced villages and blooming sidr trees resulting in the golden honey the Hadhramaut if famed for. In Haid al-Jazil, mud-brick houses cling bravely to a massive boulder, as if carved by giants. Further in, Sif unfolds beneath a white-plastered palace, while nearby the pastel-hued Buqshan Palace sits high in a feat of traditional Hadhrami architecture. Then there’s Shibam, the “Manhattan of the Desert,” where centuries-old mud-brick skyscrapers ripple like heat mirages at sunset. A drift across the sea from the coast of Hadhramaut to Socotra, is an island so alien it feels like another planet with dragon-blood trees, turquoise lagoons, and ethereal caves.
