Cuban Roots Take Center Stage in City Theatre’s ‘How to Break In a Glove’
By Marlee Card, Assistant Arts Editor/Writer (Intern)
At its heart, “How to Break In a Glove” is not just about a family living under one roof, it’s about generations learning how to understand each other, clumsily, painfully, and sometimes hilariously.
Set within a Cuban American family living in Hialeah, the play follows three generations navigating family communication and emotional vulnerability. Playwright Chris Anthony Ferrer drew heavily from his own childhood and relationships with family members while developing the story, though the script eventually went beyond autobiography.

📍Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, 4020 Virginia Beach Dr
This is 3 of 4. A shoreline shaped by protest, protected by community.
In 1945, Black Miamians took to the waters of a whites-only beach in a bold act of civil disobedience. The result? Virginia Key Beach, a designated “colored only” recreation site, reachable only by boat, but filled with Black joy, spirit, and sanctuary.
For decades, it was a space for baptisms, beach days, and belonging. Then came the closures, the threats of private development, and the fight to reclaim it.
Today, it stands restored and reopened. A living monument to what we build when we’re denied. To the communities that gather even when told they can’t.
As we return for The Juneteenth Experience, we come with memory and movement. With music, with voice, with purpose.
Because the tide always turns.
