Five years ago today, I got the worst phone call of my life. I was told my dad had been in a plane crash. My first instinct was to ask if he was being transferred to the hospital, if I needed to rush to see him. The silence on the other end told me everything I didn’t want to hear. That silence changed my life forever.
Since I was a kid, I dreamed of making movies. I never could have imagined my first feature film would be born from the aftermath of my dad’s death. He was the one who taught me to fly when I was a teenager, who gave me this superpower. I made a promise to use aviation to make the world a better place.
That promise became PASSAGE, a two-month solo flight halfway across the planet in my airplane, the Spirit of Science. On board were science education tools for more than 20,000 kids, including telescopes, robots, and books. I had to navigate the infamous Andes Mountains, manage in-flight emergencies, and try to make it home in one piece.
The last time I saw my dad was just two days before his crash, when my friends and I filmed the first promo video for PASSAGE. It was meant to be a surprise for him, but he never found out. After he was gone, I had to make the hardest choice of my life. Do I quit flying, or do I move forward with this project?
For the past five years, the film crew documented every step. From my lowest lows to my highest highs.
Today, on the five-year anniversary of my dad’s crash, I am proud to unveil the official poster for my first ever movie: Wright of Passage. The artwork was illustrated by hand by the incredibly talented Kira Knoop, whose vision brought the heart of this story to life.
