There is not a lot of moments that ideas come to life without compromise. But this one from 2021 is one of them. Working with VanMoof’s in-house production team and 2 brilliant partners The Mill and Jim Stoten we created 2 films.
The first film is part of the ‘Ride The Future’ campaign and based around the idea ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’. Introducing all the slick designed and mostly patented components of a VanMoof S3 e-bike, coming together as one. Not just to for the enjoyment of biking but also coming together with nature (represented by a meticulous frog). Celebrating the positive impact of riding a bike, amazingly crafted by the CGI team at The Mill.
When we were developing the idea for the first film, I thought it would be nice to let the frog have a little ‘trip’ and take the audience through a cycling utopia - dreaming how things could change for the better.
This was part was meant to break the CGI film, almost juxtaposing the slick CGI material with hand drawn illustrations - done by Jim Stoten in his unique colourful and lighthearted style.
In this part we see our frog protagonist works its way through the smog-filled roads, traffic jams and busy streets, before everything around him starts to quickly change. With every pedal push, the streets start to clear, cycling lanes pop up on the roads and flowers begin to bloom.
When Jim’s storyboard appeared under our noses we all knew that this would be a standalone film - film 2. It’s a true example of craftsmanship, an expression of Jim’s wonderful mind and a playful encouragement for its viewers to make more conscious decisions going forward.
I thought it would be nice to show you in a rough edit how the 2 films would have fitted together. I still love it and hope you do, too 😍

Never forget I thought it was a good idea to hand-paint all the wires the night before the shoot in my living room… which took the whole night. In the end we decided to colour them all pink for the actual cover.
