Three 5” figures from my last soda firing with @cpf_ceramics
These figures were a sort of vehicle for trying out a commercial body in soda, I was amazed there was no warping as I expected them to go mega bendy in the kiln.
These will be available at @ceramicwales next month and online in July
I’m working on glazing my final batch of pots ahead of @ceramicwales next month. These are various layering combinations using a couple of base glazes I’ve been working on for a while, fired at cone 6 electric.
I’ve been using wax emulsion as a resist to interrupt the layers of glaze in decorative ways, either picking out the sprigged features or creating brushwork motifs on the surface.
It’s been loads of fun getting back into using brushwork for decoration
I’m well pleased to share that I will be at @ceramicwales next month!
It’s my first ever proper big serious pottery festival so naturally I’m bricking it a bit, but I’ve been on a productive run since December and really buzzing to share and hopefully sell my pots!
The quest continues for double walled (sorta) bowls.
These bowls have a thrown top with a pinch formed bottom.
They have been giving me grief for a few iterations as the bases often explode in the kiln or crack away when drying and firing.
They look so great that I’m persisting with them, making small adjustments to the process to try and improve success rate whilst keeping a spontaneous feel in the making of them
These fellas were made from press-moulded parts that I use as building blocks, and then and soda fired with an iron engobe. Mould-making in ceramics is better known as a process that involves setting plaster around a form, in order to recreate and repeat that form in clay.
I’ve taken a more direct approach by carving negative space into clay and then bisque firing it to create a mould from which I can quickly produce numbers of sculptural elements to build with.
I get a thrill from this ‘blind’ carving process as the resulting design is birthed out of the mould rather than reproducing a predetermined object or design.
