Who's got the power? We got the power! Last week, NYers turned out in droves to demand an end to mass incarceration in NY. We called on lawmakers to pass legislation the would provide parole justice, challenge wrongful convictions, and make it easier for people to return to their communities after incarceration. We need the legislature and Governor to step up -- pass the bills and get them signed. Our prison crisis can't go on any longer!

A report published earlier this year by New York State Senator Julia Salazar called for urgent NYS prison reforms including expanding pathways to release & upholding the rights & dignity of incarcerated people. We’re coming together with partners THIS MONDAY 3/16 for an #EndMassIncarceration Advocacy Day in Albany. RSVP at http://rebrand.ly/MassInc. Our Senior Attorney, Gina Papera-Ewing recently co-authored a blog post with @nyclu describing the rampant discrimination elderly and sick New Yorkers with criminal convictions face in nursing home admissions. The result is dire: vulnerable individuals who have served their time and pose no threat to public safety remain confined to prison–often for years–as their medical conditions rapidly decline. Today ahead of the legislature’s budget hearing on public protection, we joined allies at @ccalternatives @rappcampaign @haltsolitary_ny @paroleprepny @nys_jails_justice_network to demand just pathways to release and improved conditions inside as solutions to New York State prison crisis. NY spends $4 billion on DOCCS plus $1 billion on National Guard in prison. The results have been mismanagement, negligence, death and racist brutality. Even as we are told there isn’t money to support our communities. Budgets are moral documents and we demand a moral response. The state could save $1 billion by implementing our package: #earnedtime #secondlook #wrongfulconviction #elderparole #clemency fair & timely parole, rights behind bars & more

Today, formerly incarcerated New Yorkers, crime survivors, people with loved ones in prison + lawmakers are rallying in NYC, Rochester, Long Island, Westchester, the Hudson Valley, Ithaca & Albany to demand Parole Justice to reunite families and build safer communities across NY. New York must enact Elder Parole and Fair & Timely Parole this coming legislative session.
