Art Art Art Design By Anette Højlund @anettehojlund A designer or an artist seeks to bring things into being. Both design and art are creative professions, but while design is typically tied to a material, a method, an assignment or another, predefined challenge, art has a… Further reading on Parole.cc Imageseries ‘Cosmologies’ also by the author and artist, Anette Højlund.

The film [FIFA] was created back in 2015 and touches upon the problems when Qatar is hosting FIFA World Cup. While the World Cup seems to exist to bring people together to share their love for football this year it seems to divide us - as Qatar as host lured poor migrant workers to - so-called “modern slavery” and upholds discriminating LGBTQ laws. This film can be streamed on parole.cc. [FIFA] is a film with an investigative approach, critically examining the connection between the commercial language of football and the actions of the president and board members of the FIFA organization, in the specific corruption case of 2015. The individual skills of the players that are praised in the branding strategies of Nike and Adidas, such as the “Predator”, “Hypervenom”, “Control Everything”, “Cause Chaos” and “Built to Win” campaigns, were the same rhetorics and sometimes words used by journalists in a negative sense to describe the people involved in the corruption case. The film is a visual and literal investigation into the double meanings of the rhetorics of football, as a specific visual culture, and the rhetorics that form and corrupt the actions in the culture of neoliberal corporate management. Film created by Gustav Holst Kurtzweil & Emil Willumsen

Hvad laver en økonom i Designrådet?/ What is an economist doing in the Danish Design Council? Af: Asmus Lauridsen og Johanne Aarup Hansen (This article is in Danish because it relates to Danish design history and community. The article will later be published in English.)

The Remote Sensation of Disintegration ––– By Imani Jacqueline Brown ––– 1.1. The projects of colonialism, genocide, slavery, and fossil fuel production are phases of a single system of matter, wealth, culture, life, and soul dislocation known as Extractivism. Extractivism operates on bodies at fractal scales—expanding from the scale of the cell, the decomposed bacterium, and the leaf of three-corner marsh grass, to the scale of humans, oil fields, and Deltaic floodplains.[...] Full text and video on parole.cc

“The myth of ‘democratic design’ and why the concept never should be used again. By Christian Björk @chr_bjork Summary: There has been an inflation of the concept of ‘democracy’. City-planning, public talks, town squares, and design in general, are today termed ‘democratic’. It is not surprising, who does not want to be democratic?

Notes on Degrowth and the Dictatorship of the Proletariat ––– By Jamie Tyberg / @degrowcapital ––– In the April 2022 issue of Monthly Review, degrowth scholars laid out a vision for an ecosocialist degrowth. They reasoned that, fundamentally, degrowth “requires the social appropriation of the main means of (re)production and a democratic, participatory, ecological planning.”(1) That, only when “people, at various scales, exercise direct power democratically,” can we determine “what is to be produced, how, and how much; how to remunerate different kinds of productive and reproductive activities that sustain us and the planet.”(2) In other words, self-government is a necessity to realize the idea of regrowth. Carpets and art share a long and interwoven past. Historically there was no distinction between the two. Carpets have been a legitimate medium for both art and artistic expression, yet something changed in the western world during early modernity. Look Up: Climate Change Is Not a Crisis, It’s a Beating –– by Timothée Parrique –– [...] We fucked up. That’s the feeling many people get when they read these numbers. But there is something wrong with that feeling. It is not really “we” who have fucked up. It is unfair to lay the responsibility of the planetary crisis on a homogenous humanity, as if we all equally participated in the mess. And this is the main point I want to make: “we” are not all in the same boat facing a common human predicament, as the discourse of the Anthropocene would suggest. Oikos: The Home As a Cosmogram –– by Federico Campagna –– Seen in its pure materiality, as a giant rock speeding through outer space, our planet can be examined through the lenses of astronomy, geology, physics and chemistry. If we focus on the thin layer of life on its surface, however, we need to resort to a particular branch of biology, known as ‘ecology’ – literally, the ‘discourse around the home’. The prefix ‘eco’, from the Greek oikos, home, features in several other terms defining the set of all life-forms that inhabit a certain space – whether this is the fully material space of an eco-system, or the partly immaterial realm of the eco-nomy. Growthocene: On the origins of the ‘fairy tale of eternal economic growth’ –– by Mattias Schmelzer –– […] Recent research has shown how skewed the global distribution of the benefits of economic growth are – while the bottom 50 percent hardly benefitted at all from the growth between 1995 and 2021. The richest 1 percent of the global population captured 38 percent of it. With climate change, resource limits, and secular stagnation, this make-believe “resolution of real contradictions” reveals itself as clearly “imaginary.” Consequently, in order to dismantle the hegemony of growth, climate movements have to develop a profound and critical understanding of the real societal contradictions, hierarchies and power dynamics shaping capitalism and transform them in new ways beyond growth. In times of accelerated change, to what flag do you pledge allegiance? By @maja_ciric_curator When Neil Armstrong landed on the Moon, as a way of marking the territory he put a flag on it. After all, it’s human nature to fight for power by creating compelling spectacles, to impose dominance by using symbols as an extension of our thought and vision. We will never know if that spectacle was pre-recorded in the film studio, but even with that particular imperialist US flag symbolically signaling the domination in the endless cosmic realm, the wholeness of the universe was too much to grasp.

Disco is not merely a genre of dance music, but a complex subculture holding progressive political beliefs. Alongside it’s glittering clothes and sexy moves, disco came to rise in the United States in the 1970s, evolving from the well-known international sounds of Motown, rooted in New York and Philadelphia.
