I’ve recently returned from a surreal 6 weeks in the beautiful mountains of western NC @penlandschool . I taught the Fall Concentration and am still digesting all that it has meant to me. It was top to bottom an incredible session from instructors to students to core fellows to staff to the leaves changing from green to gone. I feel so lucky to have had such a lovely group of intensely creative folks in my class, not to mention a great assistant. We forged a lot of steel, went on a couple good field trips, threw a party, lit a giant brazier sculpture on fire, and ate an absolute mountain of delicious food. Thanks for having me, and I hope to be back before too long! #blacksmith #metalart #craftschoolexperience #appalachianmountains #fallcolors #teaching #bonfire

Ok, ready to forge a BBQ fork. 🔥🔨 This is a great beginner blacksmithing project that shows to the possibilities of shaping iron. @pardeemetal is here teaching in @penlandiron for 6 weeks, and his students have made huge strides. The next step in creating this “Big Meat” BBQ fork is creating the more delicate neck. To accomplish this, he will add two fullerings which will then be drawn out through heat and hammering. (Fullering: any forging process that creates a sharp transition.) If you missed them, be sure to check out our two earlier videos with @pardeemetal . 🔥🔥🔥 Want to learn blacksmithing at Penland? Check out our SUMMER 2026 workshops at our LINK IN BIO and: Apply by November 17th for summer scholarships.

Working smart. Here teaching artist @pardeemetal is using the principle of shearing to use his chisel (created in an earlier video) to create the tines of a BBQ fork… “Basically by stretching the metal directly behind where it’s really thin and weak, it’s pushing it apart and it’s tearing itself open. The chisel never actually goes through the metal,” he explained. Stay tuned for PART 3 where Abraham shapes the fork. 🔥🔥🔥 Interested in learning the art of blacksmithing at Penland? ➡️ Enrolling now for our spring concentration with @mr.meers (8 weeks) ➡️ Announcing Summer 2026 workshops October 15th (4-day and 2-week) #blacksmithing #forging

POV: It’s day 2 of a 6-week blacksmithing intensive in the @penlandiron studio with @pardeemetal Making your own tools is one of the best parts of blacksmithing, and a chisel is a great place to start. Stay tuned for PART 2 where Abraham uses the chisel to make a BBQ fork. 👀 Big thanks to @pardeemetal for taking the time out of his studio to share his hard-won knowledge. 🔥🔥🔥 Interested in learning the art of blacksmithing at Penland? ➡️ Enrolling now for our spring concentration with @mr.meers (8 weeks) ➡️ Announcing Summer 2026 workshops October 15th (4-day and 2-week) #blacksmithing #abrahampardee #penland

This little utility table is the class project for my Power Hammer Tools and Techniques class at @johnccampbellfolkschool in August. Not sure what I did before I had it, but since I designed and built it last year for this class I’ve used it every single time I forge! I originally envisioned using it next to a powerhammer but once I set it by my anvil I didn’t want it anywhere else! Link in bio to sign up and make one for yourself. #blacksmith #table #joinery #powerhammer #tools #metal #art

Knocked out a new hammer-eye punch for myself. Tools to make tools! Let’s do some forging together this year! I’m at @johnccampbellfolkschool Aug. 3-9 teaching Powerhammer Tools and Techniques. I’m also at @penlandschool Sep. 28 - Nov. 7 teaching “Making Plans and Letting Go”, all about forging process and its relationship with iron design. A fun little “thank you” coat hook I made recently. Steel and Si Bronze. This piece exemplifies the balance between planning and improv, as well as process-driven design, that I want to examine in my Fall Concentration @penlandschool . Come explore this amazing plastic medium with me for 6 weeks in one of the most beautiful learning environments the Smoky Mountains have to offer. Here are some pics of the prototype table I built in preparation for my demo at @ca_blacksmith_association ‘s Oktoberfest. I honestly think the demo piece came out even nicer, but this one is doing a good job of occupying space in my living room. #blacksmith #table #sculpture #joinery #metalart #furniture

A few weeks ago I had the special privilege to attend the 2024 @ca_blacksmith_association Oktoberfest as the main demonstrator. I forged a sculptural cocktail table and I was very happy with how the demo went. I got to hang out with some old friends and make some new ones as well! Many thanks to all the dedicated volunteers that helped set up and carry out such a great event and thanks as well to all the warm and enthusiastic attendees who made me feel so welcome! There is such a vibrant blacksmithing and metal arts scene on the West coast and I hope to be back soon. Photo credits: (1) @leaharipotch (2-7) John graham of CBA
