In this book Grady Hendrix nails the mix of 80s nostalgia, friendship, and pure possession horror in My Best Friend’s Exorcism. Think Stranger Things meets The Exorcist — but way weirder! Nearly done with it and it’s been a fun great read! I’ll be checking out the movie once I’m done with it!

Immensely readable skim across the crud-infested surface of the horror publishing industry of the 70s and 80s. Hendrix is an amusing writer, although it's often hard to tell whether he's being serious or sarcastic - so reading recommendations can be unclear. If unsure, go for the cover! Speaking of which, those covers - such an important part of the phenomenon - are wonderfully reproduced and take centre stage in this beautifully designed book.

Yesterday was a two-fold delight: catching up with long-time friend Jerry and meeting Grady Hendrix at Powell's. For thirty years, Jerry has brought exuberance, wonder, kindness, empathy, and quirky-as-f*&k awesomeness to our friendship. And for the last nine years that he's been on my radar, Grady has brought these same qualities to his books -- amongst horror, gore, suspense, and mystery, natch.
I first fell in love with Grady's words and themes when friend and class act Earl gifted me My Best Friend's Exorcism. I finished those final pages in a hospital cafeteria while my mother was recovering from surgery, and Grady's combination of horror & heart -- my favorite combo -- moved me to tears. In all of his works, readers gasp at the violence once second then get goosebumps at the swells of emotion the next.
I'd written Grady a fan letter back in the day -- a regular gig of mine with authors -- and we struck up an acquaintanceship that's still going strong. Plus, he loves Christopher Pike, my cherished favorite author since childhood, so what and who's not to love? I even wore my Midnight Club T-shirt to the event, so there.
Grady knows how to do an author event, let me tell you! He was in town to promote his latest-n-greatest, Witchcraft for Wayward Girls. Rather than a more traditional reading followed by a Q&A, Grady presented the audience with a history of witchcraft. With rapid-fire finesse -- think auctioneer or horse race caller -- he conjured up connection and depth, pulling us in with the power of his words and the accompaniment of a slideshow. As always, he alternated tones and weight; he'd dive into the most serious and disturbing of human nature one moment then pivot to a book synopsis and book cover of a schlocky '70s paperwork from a dime-store spinning rack. If I were to choose one word to capture the energy he imbued in the packed room, it would be "Incantatory."

Now, I know this book was known well before said book reviewed it and compared others of its genre, but finding, better yet thrifting, a book pointed out in the collected covers in such beautiful color and detail; the pictures themselves feel as though you could reach out and take them out of the book to read themselves, better yet actually have your own copy!
