Meet Bryde’s whales!
Unlike humpbacks, Bryde’s whales don’t migrate. They’re tropical residents, thriving in warm waters year-round — including Panama’s Pacific coast.
Panacetacea has been studying Bryde’s whales in the Gulf of Chiriquí, using photo-ID, biopsy samples, and LIMPET tags to understand their behavior, distribution, and movements. Preliminary data suggests they show high site fidelity to the Contreras Islands 🇵🇦

⭐️ Scars — From entanglements, predators, or boat strikes. They help identify individuals and reveal what a whale has survived.
⭐️ Barnacles — These hitchhikers attach to slow-moving whales and can indicate habitat use and migration patterns.
⭐️ Dorsal fin notches — Unique nicks and shapes help researchers tell individuals apart — like a fingerprint.
⭐️ Tags — Satellite tags provide data on movement, diving behavior, and migration routes.
These details help us understand whale behavior, track populations, and inform conservation. 🐋
