While historic buildings tell wonderful stories, they also test your budget.
In honor of National Preservation Month, here are five things to consider when you are planning to bring these buildings back to life:
🔍 You’re working with the unknown - Hidden conditions, deferred maintenance, and aging systems can quickly shift scope and cost.
🛠️ Materials and craftsmanship aren’t standard - Matching original materials or finding the right artisans can take time, patience, and budget.
🏛️ Not all preservation is the same - Restoration and renovation are very different paths, each with distinct cost implications.
📜 Regulatory requirements add complexity - Historical reviews, approvals, and compliance with preservation standards can impact both schedule and budget.
⚖️ Trade-offs are part of the process - Balancing historic character, modern performance, and budgets require thoughtful decisions at every stage.
Wondering when you should start cost discussions for historic renovations? The earlier the better!

We’re excited to kick off March by celebrating Women in Construction (WIC) Week! 👷♀️🏗️
“Construction” might conjure up images of hard hats and steel toe boots, but WIC Week challenges us to widen that lens. Women are shaping projects long before ground is broken and long after the ribbon is cut. They’re in design meetings, they’re estimating budgets, solving field challenges, leading operations, and keeping projects moving when things go off track.
At Palacio, we see every day how women shape the trajectory of a project. Not just in one role or phase, but along the entire climb! 🧭⛰️

This Engineers Week, we’re happily joining our AEC colleagues to celebrate the engineers who make complex buildings possible.
Structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineers guide critical decisions around safety, energy systems, technology, and constructability to help project teams move from concept to reality. Their collaboration and shared problem solving on design teams help transform the future with buildings that perform today and endure tomorrow! 🏢⚙️
