Fishing is always better with friends. Even if they have four legs! Bryce was fishing Darby Creek when she landed her first trout of the season. Her husky, Elsa, was excited about the catch too! 📍 Darby Creek

A HUGE thank you to the @PennStateFlyFish for helping build 50 fish habitat structures for Colyer Lake in Centre County and eight turtle basking platforms for Black Moshannon Lake. Over the semester, the students learn to the basics of fly fishing and frequent Colyer Lake to practice their skills. Then, at the end of the semester, they give back to the water that nurtured their education by building fish habitat structures to enhance the fish habitat and fishing just a minutes from downtown State College. Over three days, students helped out PFBC staff build and place the fish habitat structures. Even when it rained it didn’t stop these classes. They also learned about reptiles and amphibians from PFBC staff while building turtle basking platforms. #FlyFishing #PennState #WeAre

Whether it is by foot, boat, bike, or automobile, our Waterways Conservation Officers patrol Pennsylvania’s streams, rivers and lakes everyday. They are out there to protect anglers and boaters against violations and enforce environmental laws. They lead fishing programs and boating safety courses to ensure anglers and boaters are learning the best practices on the water. They investigate the illegal commercialization of native species, illicit trafficking of wildlife and work to stop practices that cause damage to the environment. We thank them for the work they do to protect, conserve and enhance the Commonwealth’s aquatic resources. #NationalPoliceWeek

Looking to fish a new lake? It’s not new but Kyle Lake is experiencing a “New Lake Effect.” Kyle Lake was drained in 2016 for repairs and annual stocking began in 2020. If you’re interested in catching quality-sized Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, and bullhead, plan a trip to the Jefferson County lake. The results: 320 Largemouth Bass were netted ranging in size from 3 to 18 inches in length. The catch rate for Largemouth Bass > 15 inches was the high on record with a catch rate of 29 fish/hour. To read more about the study follow the link in our bio. #BassFishing #JeffersonCounty #KyleLake

When you're fishing this summer and you're near a fish ladder, remember the rules! It is unlawful to fish within 100 feet of the entrance or exit of a fish ladder.

The Bluegill or more commonly known as “Sunfish” may have been the first fish you ever caught. Its scientific species name is “macrochirus” and means “large hand,” probably describing the fish’s body shape. #Bluegill #TightLines #Fishing

Who needs lungs? Not the lungless salamander! Salamanders in the family Plethodontidae include over 500 species and are incredibly diverse. Instead of using lungs, these animals absorb all the oxygen they need through their moist skin. Pennsylvania is home to 15 species of lungless salamanders. They are: - Green Salamander - Northern Dusky Salamander - Northern Seal Salamander - Allegheny Mountain Dusky Salamander - Northern Two-Lined Salamander - Eastern Long-tailed Salamander - Northern Spring Salamander - Four-toed Salamander - Eastern Red-backed Salamander - Northern Slimy Salamander - Valley and Ridge Salamander - Northern Ravine Salamander - Wehrle’s Salamander - Eastern Mud Salamander - Northern Red Salamander. Pictured are the Green Salamander and Four-toed Salamander. #AmphibianWeek #AmphibianWeek2026 #FarOutFriday #ConservationMatters

You might think about amphibians as being tied to water. But most amphibians use terrestrial (land) habitats and some amphibians lead completely terrestrial lives. It might seem odd to picture an amphibian in the woods, or high up in the tree tops, but that is where some of them live! Amphibians have adapted to a wonderful variety of habitats that seem unusual to us, but where they are very much at home. The Eastern Red-backed Salamander and Wood Frog, found in Pennsylvania, are some of the more terrestrial amphibians found in the state. #AmphibianWeek #AmphibianWeek2026 #TerrestialThursday

When heading out to your favorite fishing spot, be aware of ticks. Here are some tips: ⚫Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants and closed shoes. ⚫Wear light-colored clothing to make it easier to spot ticks. ⚫Treat your clothing and gear with permethrin. ⚫Apply insect repellent to exposed skin. ⚫When you return home, conduct a full-body check for ticks. Also, check your clothing, pets and gear. If you find an attached tick, remove it as soon as possible. Clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or rubbing alcohol. If you find a tick, consider sending it to the Pennsylvania Tick Research Lab at ticklab.org for a free tick test. If a rash or flu-like symptoms appear, contact your healthcare provider right away. You can learn more about tick diseases at health.pa.gov/ticks

Healthy wetlands are very important to amphibians! Wetlands provide amphibians with a place to live, breed and find food. Amphibians make use of almost all the features of a wetland. They may hibernate under nearby logs or tree roots, attach their eggs to wetland vegetation, and climb up reeds or grass to better send calls out to females. #AmphibianWeek #AmphibianWeek2026 #WetlandWednesday
