Only a few days left to sign up for our letterpress class—don't miss out!
Wednesdays, 6 - 9 p.m.
May 20th - June 24th
Instructor: Rosae Reeder
Six-Week Short Course
Letterpress, also known as moveable type, is the process of printing with moveable components of either wood or lead type. Today, letterpress printing has become fashionable, used to print wedding invitations, business cards, and anything with that traditional vintage look. In this six-week course, students will learn the process of setting both wood and lead type and printing on a Vandercook letterpress. Instruction will also explore letterpress as a wonderful tool for printing images in edition through the creation of pressure prints. Printing of relief blocks, registration, layout, paper size, and color will also be discussed. This class is open to beginners and advanced artists. Tuition includes a $20 lab fee.

There’s something incredibly meaningful about marking PAFA’s 220th anniversary not just with celebration, but with making.
I had the chance to spend time in the printmaking studio today at PAFA @pafacademy with Professor Tony Rosati and his team, who created this beautiful limited edition commemorative screenprint for #PAFA220. These prints will be part of the gala on April 10—each one a true work of art.
What I love most is how much thought and craft went into this. It began with collaboration—conversations, sketches, and a careful composition to reflect both the moment and the history behind it. The design elements are direct references to the Historic Landmark Building, from the architectural elements to the tiny diamonds. From there, the design was translated into a photographic process using acetate and then brought to life through hand-printing.
Tony walked me through the process. Each print is built in layers. There are two separate color runs, printed one at a time, requiring precision, patience, and real expertise. Even the paper selection was intentional, chosen to complement and elevate the final image.
This is what PAFA does best: honoring tradition while bringing artists, students, and faculty together to create something new.
Grateful to Tony Rosati, Print Shop Manager @elizastraussjenkins , PAFA alums and printshop monitors @kristinadenzelbickford and @vhanssens , PAFA Trustee Rebecca Segall, videographer Kevin Hackenberg @get_kinetic , and the entire team for this incredible work—and for giving me a glimpse into the process!

We will start by building some shop skills through our first project: a mitered pencil box with spline joints. Accompanying this we will explore chip carving. These skill building exercises are the starting points for the overarching class goal of building your own sculptural pieces.
