MUSUBI • MANIFEST [日本語/English] 縄文の土器から、 しめ縄、山伏の修行の縄、 祝いの結び、 そして着物の腰紐まで。 縄は、日本の中で、 神聖さ、つながり、境界、精神性をあらわすものとして、 古くから存在してきました。 MUSUBIは、この伝統を現代の身体へと取り戻すことを探る文化プロジェクトです。 近年、縛りは世界に広がりつつあります。 しかし今もなお、性的なものとして誤解されたり、 限られた文脈で語られることが少なくありません。 私たちは、縄による身体へのアプローチが、 祈り、瞑想、つながり、芸術表現として、 もっと自由に探求される未来を思い描いています。 この実践の文化的なルーツを探り、 その発見をイベント、対話、ポッドキャスト、出版を通して共有していく。 それが私たちのミッションです。 この探求は、まだ始まったばかりです。 From Jōmon dogū figures and shimenawa, to the ropes of yamabushi ascetics, wedding knots, and koshihimo worn with kimono. Rope has long been part of Japanese society as a symbol of connection, boundary, and spirituality. MUSUBI is a cultural project exploring how this tradition can return to the body in contemporary life. Today shibari is gaining visibility around the world, yet it is still often misunderstood or confined to narrow contexts. We imagine a future in which rope is explored freely as meditation, connection, and artistic expression. Our mission is to research the cultural roots of this practice and share what we discover through events, conversations, podcasts, and publications. We are only at the beginning. In Shinto, rope marks a sacred boundary. But the rope does not make the tree sacred. The rope is just an indication. The rope just reminds us that all trees are sacred, alive, interconnected, part of something else. In the same way, rope practice creates an opportunity to connect with ourselves. This time, we are honored to welcome the wonderful Butoh dancer @kaoru.butoh , born in Japan and based in Seattle. Kaoru Okumura will present a special musubi performance in collaboration with @sayako.shiratori . Music will be performed by the musician collective Jashumon (Katsuhiko Makino, Dave Kawamura, Toshiaki Komori, and Akaciq). Combining rare ancient instruments usually seen only in museums, massive analog synthesizers, and digital synthesizers capable of producing strange and intricate sounds, they will create a mysterious and richly individual soundscape. We will begin the event with a conversation between @aiaida_tokyo , @pablo.shibari , and @sayako.shiratori . They will speak about their recent adventures in the Fuji Tainai caves and their research around Yamabushi techniques. As a special guest, we will welcome @myrsini_sar , who will speak with Pablo about the experience of being tied at @aidamethod.studio . For this edition’s pop-ups, we will welcome two guests. @edoardo_sferrella will introduce his therapeutic practice, and together we will explore the connection between holistic medicine and rope. @myrsini_sar will share her latest work, combining artisanal paper-making and digital works, exploring the intersection of memory and dreams. We will also enjoy a grounding tea ceremony by @takao_epoche , who will collaborate with Pablo to offer a unique tea + rope experience for the attendees. The venue will be decorated with new textile creations by @aiaida_textiles . Come and see what Ai has been working on over the last few weeks. [ENG/日本語] This week I leave the water temporarily, inspired by the end of the sakura season, to talk about peak experiences and integration. Every spring, we gather around the moment of perfect bloom. It lasts only an instant. The leaves come, the flower gives way to the fruit that falls and decays. The peak is real. The beauty is real. But transformation may belong to the whole cycle. In my own experience with rope, change does not arrive as one unforgettable moment. It comes quietly, between the ups and downs. Would you jump into the ocean? This week I continue from my last post about why I don’t feel connected to the language of surrender. Some of you texted me about how difficult is to relate to such images. I stay with the ocean. Being in the ocean can feel like bliss, communion, and being held by something larger. But it can also be frightening. A place of dissolution, danger, and death. Words do not only describe experience, they shape the way we enter it. Do you surrender to the ocean when you jump in? Do you yield to the chef when you sit down for a course menu? I never felt connected to the language of surrender. Maybe we need different words. It’s a long story about a rock. Years ago, I was with my best friends by the edge of a river, talking about the life we wanted to build: surrounded by friends, by the art we make, the food we cook, the coffee we brew. I gave them a rock, and somehow it felt like a mirror. Now they have opened a café in Ueda. The space is filled with paintings, and their world is there for others to enter and enjoy. The air smells of toast with butter and anko, and fresh coffee. I knew the rock was a mirror. Now it hangs in the air like a life being dreamt. 石についての、長い話がある。 何年か前、川辺にいて、私たちは自分たちがつくりたい人生について話していた。友達に囲まれて、自分たちの作るアートがあって、自分たちの作る料理があって、自分たちの淹れるコーヒーがある人生。石を渡した。その時、なぜかそれは鏡のように感じられた。 今、二人は上田でカフェを開いた。空間には絵が飾られていて、二人の世界は、誰かが入って、楽しめる場所になっている。空気には、あんバターのトーストと、淹れたてのコーヒーの香りがある。 今ならわかる。あの石は鏡だった。空中に吊られながら、夢を見ているような人生のかたちをしている。 #artinstallations #rockartwork #cafejapan #ueda #musubi
