On view: Pouria Kazemi, An Extended Study of Hands in 20th Century Home Movies, 26.02-29.03.2026
The exhibition is on view in room 3.
'An Extended Study of Hands in 20th Century Home Movies' (2024) is a 24-hour video created in collaboration with various archive centers, media libraries, private collectors, and educational institutions across Europe and North America. The film consists of more than two thousand unique shots, each extracted from home movies and focused exclusively on the hands of individuals within the frames.
The aim is to underscore the historical significance of what we have held in our hands while also exploring the narrative of photographic advancements and the evolution of documentation. The study of hands and their interactions with objects and people offers insight into cultural and social dynamics, many of which remain relevant and reflective of contemporary realities. From the gradual dominance of plastic bags to the unchanging image of men marching with guns, the film unravels patterns that invite viewers into an anthropological study.

Pouria Kazemi (b. 1991, IR) is a filmmaker and visual artist. His recent practice explores camera-less filmmaking as an alternative method of narration, a way of resisting and de-territorializing moving images from media hegemony. These counter-narratives incorporate found footage and archive, cyanotype imagery, cyborg storytelling, drawing and scanning, oscilloscope and waveform visualization, pinhole motion pictures, obscura images, and environmental film exposure. Through these unorthodox ways of storytelling, he seeks to separate filmmaking from its heavy dependence on capital in favour of candour and artistic autonomy.
Pouria studied for his BA at Manchester School of Art and completed his MFA at the University of Bergen, Faculty of Fine Art. Screenings and exhibitions include: Høstutstillingen in Oslo, Bergen Kunsthall, lndie-AniFest in Seoul, Bury Art Museum, Fluctoplasma in Hamburg, CourtsCarouge in Geneva, CosmiX: Festival International de Cinema Experimental in Paris, Murmur Contemporary in Montreux, Huddersfield Experimental Film Screening, Balkan Can Kino in Athens, Best Before Collective in Stockholm, Piksel Produksjoner in Bergen, and La Sur Real Film Festival in Berlin.

A short excerpt from a recent work "Three Views Through the Stereoscope", a documentary film exploring strangers unintentionally captured behind windows in urban photographic documentation from the late 19th to mid-20th century. Through a forensic study and interviews, the film uncovers anthropological patterns regarding the ethics of documentation, gendered architecture, and forced repatriation. "Three Views Through the Stereoscope" debuts this summer in Zagreb.

An excerpt from my most recent work, Curating The Lost: A Feast for Creeps. Triggered by the pile of lost and abandonned art material, this film reworks archival image, video, text and sound in search of clues about past events framed by strangers. The film raises the question of morality, and draws attention to perceptions of self and other.
