One oyster filters up to 50 gallons of water per day, making them one of the most eco-friendly foods you can eat. * Packed with zinc—there’s a reason Casanova ate 50 a day (if you know, you know😉) * British oysters taste cleaner and brinier (colder waters = better flavor) * Add £7 for prosecco—the acidity is the perfect pairing Columbia Road’s been London’s flower market since 1869. The oysters? A brilliant modern addition. 📍 @oysterboyevents Ezra Street, off Columbia Road 🕐 Sundays 8am-3pm #ColumbiaRoad #LondonFoodMarket #OysterBar #LondonEats #EastLondon LondonFoodie • London Weekend • British Oysters •Sustainable Food • Sustainable Seafood • | Oyster bar London | Columbia Road | Sustainable seafood | British oysters | Sunday markets London |

(Yet) Another Chapter in the Selkie Saga 😅🐚
The Tiny Café vs The System: A (Cautiously) Hopeful Update 🌊 So many of you have popped by to check in, and we’re hugely grateful — here’s where we’re at: Our meeting with Council Leader Glenn Haffenden and Chief Exec Rob Cottrill went ahead as planned. The tone was collaborative, and I left feeling encouraged. There was an honest acknowledgement that things could’ve been handled better — especially around timing, enforcement, and communication — and that clarity is long overdue on the legal position around Foreshore commercial activity. While I’ve still not received a clear explanation (or citation) for the legal interpretation behind all this — or why it continues to be enforced so aggressively and inconsistently — it finally feels like the value of what we do is being recognised. And that the spirit of regeneration might be taking precedence over ill-defined red tape. One thing I must address: I’ve heard some enforcement officers received personal or unpleasant messages. While I stand firmly behind the strength of our campaign, we don’t condone personal attacks of any kind. These are people doing a tough job, and we’re now working together toward resolution. As for all of you — your support has meant the world. Truly. The love, solidarity and kindness we’ve felt from this community has been extraordinary. It’s helped carry us through — and I honestly believe it’s helped bring us to this more hopeful place. There’s still work to do — and nothing’s settled yet — but I remain cautiously optimistic.
If we can reach a fair and sensible outcome, it will be thanks not only to the power of community, but also to a council leadership willing to step in, untangle the red tape, and help local business and regeneration thrive. More soon.

A final word… After agreeing with the council to a pause on social media while we awaited a meeting, we were surprised and disappointed to see a public statement from them that misrepresented the nature of our campaign on Thursday. Responding wasn’t what we wanted — but silence in the face of misinformation wasn’t an option either. That said, the Council is a large organisation, and we think it’s likely this was simply a case of miscommunication. We’ll continue to give the benefit of the doubt and hope that Tuesday brings clarity, collaboration, and a way forward. Now, the part that really matters: 💙 The support from this community has been overwhelming. The love, encouragement, and solidarity shown by so many of you has moved us deeply — and reminded us why we do what we do. From the bottom of our hearts: thank you ♥️ We also want to say this clearly: we’ve felt nothing but support from our fellow traders on the Lower Promenade. Every business down here is doing their best, facing their own challenges, and working hard to bring life, energy, and great service to our seafront. We’re proud to stand alongside them — and grateful to be part of such a supportive neighbourhood. This has never been about one business versus another. We have felt nothing but solidarity from our neighbours. It’s about our attempt to be given the same opportunity to apply for permissions — to use our space responsibly, sustainably, and in line with what we know the public wants — without being uniquely blocked from applying for that permission, to do what others are already doing, by a legal stance from Foreshore that still hasn’t been clearly substantiated. We’re now stepping back from posting again, in good faith, ahead of Tuesday’s meeting. (We want to give everyone a break from the drama 😅🍿🤦🏻‍♂️) We’re hopeful that the conversation will be open and productive — and that a solution can be found that works for Selkie, for the Council, for our foreshore, and for our amazing town. We’ll keep you posted. With love and heartfelt thanks,
Conor

We’ve just sent this open letter to the Foreshore Trust and senior Council leadership. It lays out — as clearly and calmly as we can — the deep frustration we’ve experienced over the past year. We’ve been met with unclear enforcement, vague legislation, and a total unwillingness to engage in open dialogue. This isn’t about politics. It’s about fairness, transparency, and public service. We want to work with the council, not against it. But Foreshore’s fog of bureaucracy and obstructionist stance has left us no choice but to take our case public. Thank you to everyone who has supported The Selkie so far — from the local and national media interest, 1,200+ petition signers to those commenting, sharing, and visiting us with words of solidarity. It means the world. Please keep helping us apply gentle but firm pressure. This enforcement isn’t in the public interest. It’s not supported by law, by logic, or by local feeling. And it needs to stop. Let’s help the Council and Foreshore Trust see sense — and realise that a thriving, community-powered business should be supported, not stifled. If you are yet to sign our petition, please do so now! ➡️ SIGN THE PETITION! /supportselkie ➡️ Share this post ➡️ Tag @HastingsBoroughCouncil and Hastings Foreshore Trust ➡️ Email your support of the Selkie to: • Aaron Woods (Foreshore): [email protected] • Tony Collins (Local Councillor): [email protected] • Rob Cottrill (Hastings Chief Executive): [email protected] • Mary Kilmer (Chief Legal Officer): [email protected] 💙 #supportselkie #hastingsseafront #SupportSmallBusiness #ForeshoreTrust #CommunityRegeneration #LetUsWork #SelkieOnTheBeach

🛟 📣We’ve been told to stop using our beach seating… but no one will tell us why. For over a year, we’ve put out a few folding tables and chairs on the beach outside The Selkie — responsibly, safely, and with strong community support.
✅ Reusable glasses
✅ Regular clean-ups
✅ Tables in at night
✅ Less litter, more community But now the Foreshore Trust is demanding we stop immediately. Their reason? “All Foreshore land commercial use is illegal.” We asked for the law. They sent a vague full legal document — with no clear specific clause to back up their claim.
We asked again. Nothing.
We asked to apply for a licence change. Blocked.
Meanwhile, other businesses have permanent seating on the same Foreshore land we are told is ILLEGAL. Local MP Helena Dollimore @helenadollimore1066 has visited and pledged her full support — she agrees this makes no sense. All we want is to work with licensing to ratify something we’ve already been doing safely and responsibly — just like other nearby venues. 💥 Let Hastings Borough Council know: We want collaboration, not red tape.
We want regeneration, not obstruction.
We want common sense. SIGN THE PETITION! /supportselkie (Link in Bio) 📧 Email your condemnation of unsubstantiated bureaucratic obstruction to - [email protected]

🦪🍻 Cheers to the Legend: Billy Brewin! 🍻🦪 If you’ve ever stopped by our Columbia Road market stall on a Sunday or enjoyed an Oyster Boy Events pop-ups, chances are you’ve been charmed (and maybe slightly scandalized) by the one and only @billybrewinn . Billy isn’t just a top-tier shucker—he’s a deep-thinking, spiritual, adventure-chasing, good-time-loving legend. A man who’s seen the world (and probably been politely asked to leave a few places), he’s always got a wild tale from a far-flung corner of the globe to raise some eyebrows. But beyond the pints and punchlines, Billy is one of the kindest, most reliable souls out there. He’s made countless weddings and events extra special, ensuring every bride, groom, and oyster-loving guest gets an experience they won’t forget. Oyster Boy Events wouldn’t be the same without him, and today, we raise a shell (and a pint) to our friend and brother. Billy, you absolute gem— we love you. cheers to you! 🍻💙 #BillyTheShuckingLegend #OystersAndAdventures #oysterboyevents #MarketKing #StoriesAndShells
