One oyster filters up to 50 gallons of water per day, making them one of the most eco-friendly foods you can eat.
* Packed with zincâthereâs a reason Casanova ate 50 a day (if you know, you knowđ)
* British oysters taste cleaner and brinier (colder waters = better flavor)
* Add ÂŁ7 for proseccoâthe acidity is the perfect pairing

(Yet) Another Chapter in the Selkie Saga đ đâ¨The Tiny CafĂŠ vs The System: A (Cautiously) Hopeful Update đ
So many of you have popped by to check in, and weâre hugely grateful â hereâs where weâre at:
Our meeting with Council Leader Glenn Haffenden and Chief Exec Rob Cottrill went ahead as planned. The tone was collaborative, and I left feeling encouraged.
There was an honest acknowledgement that things couldâve been handled better â especially around timing, enforcement, and communication â and that clarity is long overdue on the legal position around Foreshore commercial activity.
While Iâve still not received a clear explanation (or citation) for the legal interpretation behind all this â or why it continues to be enforced so aggressively and inconsistently â it finally feels like the value of what we do is being recognised. And that the spirit of regeneration might be taking precedence over ill-defined red tape.
One thing I must address: Iâve heard some enforcement officers received personal or unpleasant messages. While I stand firmly behind the strength of our campaign, we donât condone personal attacks of any kind. These are people doing a tough job, and weâre now working together toward resolution.
As for all of you â your support has meant the world. Truly. The love, solidarity and kindness weâve felt from this community has been extraordinary. Itâs helped carry us through â and I honestly believe itâs helped bring us to this more hopeful place.
Thereâs still work to do â and nothingâs settled yet â but I remain cautiously optimistic.â¨If we can reach a fair and sensible outcome, it will be thanks not only to the power of community, but also to a council leadership willing to step in, untangle the red tape, and help local business and regeneration thrive.
More soon.â¨â Conor
A final wordâŚ
After agreeing with the council to a pause on social media while we awaited a meeting, we were surprised and disappointed to see a public statement from them that misrepresented the nature of our campaign on Thursday.
Responding wasnât what we wanted â but silence in the face of misinformation wasnât an option either.
That said, the Council is a large organisation, and we think itâs likely this was simply a case of miscommunication.
Weâll continue to give the benefit of the doubt and hope that Tuesday brings clarity, collaboration, and a way forward.
Now, the part that really matters:
đ The support from this community has been overwhelming.
The love, encouragement, and solidarity shown by so many of you has moved us deeply â and reminded us why we do what we do.
From the bottom of our hearts: thank you âĽď¸
We also want to say this clearly: weâve felt nothing but support from our fellow traders on the Lower Promenade.
Every business down here is doing their best, facing their own challenges, and working hard to bring life, energy, and great service to our seafront.
Weâre proud to stand alongside them â and grateful to be part of such a supportive neighbourhood.
This has never been about one business versus another.
We have felt nothing but solidarity from our neighbours.
Itâs about our attempt to be given the same opportunity to apply for permissions â to use our space responsibly, sustainably, and in line with what we know the public wants â without being uniquely blocked from applying for that permission, to do what others are already doing, by a legal stance from Foreshore that still hasnât been clearly substantiated.
Weâre now stepping back from posting again, in good faith, ahead of Tuesdayâs meeting.
(We want to give everyone a break from the drama đ đżđ¤Śđťââď¸)
Weâre hopeful that the conversation will be open and productive â and that a solution can be found that works for Selkie, for the Council, for our foreshore, and for our amazing town.
Weâll keep you posted.
With love and heartfelt thanks,â¨Conorâ¨Selkie Seafood Bar
Weâve just sent this open letter to the Foreshore Trust and senior Council leadership.
It lays out â as clearly and calmly as we can â the deep frustration weâve experienced over the past year. Weâve been met with unclear enforcement, vague legislation, and a total unwillingness to engage in open dialogue.
This isnât about politics. Itâs about fairness, transparency, and public service.
We want to work with the council, not against it. But Foreshoreâs fog of bureaucracy and obstructionist stance has left us no choice but to take our case public.
Thank you to everyone who has supported The Selkie so far â from the local and national media interest, 1,200+ petition signers to those commenting, sharing, and visiting us with words of solidarity. It means the world.
Please keep helping us apply gentle but firm pressure. This enforcement isnât in the public interest. Itâs not supported by law, by logic, or by local feeling. And it needs to stop.
Letâs help the Council and Foreshore Trust see sense â and realise that a thriving, community-powered business should be supported, not stifled.
If you are yet to sign our petition, please do so now!

đ đŁWeâve been told to stop using our beach seating⌠but no one will tell us why.
For over a year, weâve put out a few folding tables and chairs on the beach outside The Selkie â responsibly, safely, and with strong community support.â¨â Reusable glassesâ¨â Regular clean-upsâ¨â Tables in at nightâ¨â Less litter, more community
But now the Foreshore Trust is demanding we stop immediately. Their reason? âAll Foreshore land commercial use is illegal.â
We asked for the law. They sent a vague full legal document â with no clear specific clause to back up their claim.â¨We asked again. Nothing.â¨We asked to apply for a licence change. Blocked.â¨Meanwhile, other businesses have permanent seating on the same Foreshore land we are told is ILLEGAL.
Local MP Helena Dollimore @helenadollimore1066 has visited and pledged her full support â she agrees this makes no sense.
All we want is to work with licensing to ratify something weâve already been doing safely and responsibly â just like other nearby venues.
đĽ Let Hastings Borough Council know:
We want collaboration, not red tape.â¨We want regeneration, not obstruction.â¨We want common sense.

đŚŞđť Cheers to the Legend: Billy Brewin! đťđŚŞ
If youâve ever stopped by our Columbia Road market stall on a Sunday or enjoyed an Oyster Boy Events pop-ups, chances are youâve been charmed (and maybe slightly scandalized) by the one and only @billybrewinn .
Billy isnât just a top-tier shuckerâheâs a deep-thinking, spiritual, adventure-chasing, good-time-loving legend. A man whoâs seen the world (and probably been politely asked to leave a few places), heâs always got a wild tale from a far-flung corner of the globe to raise some eyebrows.
But beyond the pints and punchlines, Billy is one of the kindest, most reliable souls out there.
Heâs made countless weddings and events extra special, ensuring every bride, groom, and oyster-loving guest gets an experience they wonât forget.
Oyster Boy Events wouldnât be the same without him, and today, we raise a shell (and a pint) to our friend and brother.
Billy, you absolute gemâ we love you. cheers to you! đťđ
