From Thisispaper+ Member In a 40-year-old Taipei public housing complex, OUJ reorganises a 72-square-metre apartment around a birch plywood central block — a home designed in three phases for elderly parents and their daughters, where the architecture anticipates care before it is needed. The apartment in the Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab district occupies a dual-facade position: the south faces quiet greenery, the north a major commercial boulevard. The existing three-bedroom layout amplified the narrow proportions; iron window grilles and fixed AC units blocked light and ventilation. OUJ began with removal — the grilles and partitions stripped, a birch plywood central block inserted as the new spatial anchor from which all the rooms take their orientation. Thisispaper Newsletter 198: The Space Between Thinking and Sleeping Quietude as architecture, and what it asks of us. What connects these projects is not geography. It is restraint as a position, the deliberate removal of everything that does not need to be there. From a house on a volcanic slope to a bar in downtown LA, the work here sits with a question and lets it stay unanswered. · House in Mt Fuji by Satoshi Okada Architects · L’appartement Hu by OUJ @oujwp @studio_millspace · Odyssea: Le sel de la terre at Spiaggia Libera and PUNTA Gallery @puntagallery @spiaggialibera.gallery · Santo Tirso House by Nuno Brandão Costa · New Genesis by Abdulhamid Kircher @kircherabdul · BAR di BELLO by 22RE @22re_22re Read the full newsletter at thisispaper.substack.com Subscribe for weekly architecture and design discoveries.

À Taipei @oujwp L’appartement Hu explores how the elderly and middle-aged generations can once again share a compact housing space through phased planning and the idea of living in flow. A “central block” containing storage and the bathroom acts as the heart of the home. It enables the movement of views, light, air and everyday care throughout the interior. Pastel colors, gentle materials and geometric elements radiate from the central block, connecting the surrounding spaces and shaping an environment that feels both calm and lively for elderly living. Crédit Photo : @studio_millspace
