Next we celebrate LISA OTT - DRAGFOX ✨
Sam’s search for identity gets interrupted by a mysterious neighbourhood fox. Together they embark on a magical journey to the attic to discover the surprising things they might have in common, and how to celebrate the ways in which they differ.
Lisa Ott is a Swiss animation director based in London. They moved to the UK 9 years ago to pursue a career in film, and fell in love with stop-motion in the process.
They studied Model Making before joining the puppet team at Mackinnon & Saunders, helping to create puppets to bring other people’s stories to life. Most recently they worked on projects like Oscar and Bafta-winning Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio and Netflix’s The House.
Due to their wish to see more LGBTQIA+ stories being told in animation, they decided to take the leap into directing by attending the Directing Animation course at the National Film and Television School. There, Lisa was able to find like-minded creatives and directed their debut stop-motion short, DRAGFOX.
Lisa’s work consistently deals with themes of belonging and their experience of growing up queer in a rural farming village, as well as a celebration of the differences within the LGBTQ+ community.
“I really wanted to make a film that I wish I could’ve seen when I was younger, and I found an amazing team with the same goal. Within the LGBTQIA+ community there is such a varied and fascinating array of experiences and I’ve been seeing it all around me, so I really wanted to do my part to be telling these very specific stories. If they even just reached one person out there who would end up feeling a little more seen and a little bit less alone because of it, then I will have achieved what I set out to do. I was immensely lucky with the team I got to work with. Their trust and passion made this film possible, and I am so proud of what we have achieved. If even just one young person out there sees it and feels taken by their hand where they are currently at, that is what it’s really about for me!”
Winner of @baftaus Special Jury Award
Semi-finalist for Student @theacademy Awards

Last week, our news FINALLY broke that the legendary @ianmckellen had been cast in the titular role of our film 🦊
Yes, it’s true - the man who brought Gandalf, Magneto, and Sherlock to life can now add Ginger Snap the Fox to his illustrious repertoire (personally, we think Ginger is the new reigning queen 👑)
Some of our team had the honour of being invited to Sir Ian’s home last year to record his lines. They say never meet your heroes, but we can confirm that this incredible gentleman surpasses all expectations. His warmth, generosity, and unparalleled talent made that day unforgettable. We are so deeply fortunate to have shared those precious moments with him, watching a master at work.
And you are so fortunate that he allowed us to film our session, so that we could share some of the Dragfox journey with you.
Don’t say we don’t keep you gays fed 🍴
Spent a few silly days in my dad’s workshop with a lot of trial and error to make this first prototype of an Automata. His name is Harvey :)
It needs some extra work to smooth it out and then I might scale it down, but for now I find the noise it makes really charming 🥹

Need to start posting again, so here’s a little half an hour self portrait using Sepia powder applied with a brush. Didn’t even know this was a thing until my lovely friend @aliyahharfoot started using the technique for her animation. Been learning so much from my classmates in the last two years!

Had the most fun today animating my first stop motion quadruped walk with our Ginger Snap puppet! Who knew walk cycles could be this much fun. (Ask me again in a few months)
Acting wise I was going for a ‘fox out at night foraging’ kinda vibe, so really alert and with lots of movement but overall chipper.
Puppet and set made by the wonderful @nftsmodelmaking group.
