I have been really moved during the process of working on this album, a collaboration with Italian musician @demetriocecchitelli , who built up some beautiful ambient tonalities around some lo-fi piano recordings. Filmmaker Guillaume Vallée scanned a textile work that my mother, artist Merrie Houghton, worked on in the 1970s in Switzerland. This album will be out tomorrow through @oscarson_label in Germany, the link is in my bio. Today I was holding the tape in the sun in Paris.
This is a scan of a beautiful hand crafted textile work that my mother, Merrie Houghton, made in the 1970s, during that time she was a working artist living between Lugano and Zürich. My mother had moved to apprentice with and then worked full time for the renowned Swiss textile artist Moik Schiele, as a studio hand, helping complete and work on pieces for intl. shows. My mom met Moik in Toronto at a time when she was working in restaurants, Moik invited my mom to work for her in Switzerland and after that she worked for a decade with her hands making textile art. This was all before I was born, clearly, re: the dates.
A couple of years ago my mother showed me old film photo slides of her work. I asked to borrow them and brought them to Montreal. I asked filmmaker Guillaume Vallée to scan them. This is one pieces. Also Guillaume made a beautiful video for this album, out soon!
After I started working with Italian musician @demetriocecchitelli on an album, I thought that this piece would fit perfectly as the cover. Matthias Rehling generously agreed to release our piano / soundscape collaboration on cassette, it will be out this upcoming Friday @oscarson_label
The album mixes lo-fi piano recordings which Demetrio mixed and processed in Italy, I am really happy with this project. Matthias worked on a beautiful layout for the tape, which includes also a poetic text by Demetrio.
A pre-order release link in my bio. The additional photos of the cassette were taken by Matthias of the Oscarson label in Germany.
I release a lot of music, it is all relational and about building trust with collaborators locally and globally. These projects are about relationships, they sometimes are really focused on sound, while also often deeply interwoven in the process are conversations and exchanges about what is happening in the world and the role of artists in joining movements for social change. I see the projects as part of that dialogue, I hope that it comes through in the sound as well. I see these projects as stepping stones and celebrations of creative connections across borders in a time of crisis and rising nationalist fascisms. Thank you for considering my work!
