“In the eternity of the same split second, in the same moment, a stretch of road was about to unite the three of them. Gabrielle and Oscar called it V. (They had opted for this letter, as sharp as an arrow and able to represent somewhere, at least typographically, through the mental image that sprang up in their brains when they said V, the cutting edge of speed. If either of them had known Russian and the Cyrillic alphabet, they would have called it ᐱ, as in the name Leonid, instead of V. Because unlike the Russian letter ᐱ, V had the notable disadvantage of not pointing skywards, like a rocket. It looked more like a pickaxe or an ice axe; in other words, it didn’t express the possibility of climbing towards the sky, piercing the clouds or projecting into the dark matter of the universe, but rather the possibility of crashing to the ground).” Arthur Larrue, Sumer (Paris: RVB Books, April 2026), p. 40. Translation: Emmelene Landon. ———- @rvb_books

SUMER performance at La Gaîté Lyrique, Paris, on April 9, 2026, on the occasion of the release of the book SUMER by Óscar Monzón & Arthur Larrue, published by @rvb_books —— « Sumer vante les morts sur la route. » Arthur Larrue —— “Sumer extoll roadkill. It provides heroic evocations. Monuments are erected all over the place, in the halls of buildings, to celebrate the victims of accidents. Isn’t their sensational death enviable? Isn’t it better to crash than to grow old? Shouldn’t we let ourselves be guided by the combined action of speed and light, trusting our training to go as far as possible as fast as possible, even if it meant disintegrating? We have to remember the large mammals dazzled by headlights in the middle of the road just before the fatal impact, and envy their placid eyes. Like insects attracted by blue light, we have to wonder what is on the other side and burn with intensity.” Arthur Larrue

SUMER Óscar Monzón & Arthur Larrue published by RVB Books @rvb_books —— Short story: Arthur Larrue #arthurlarrue Photographs and layout: Óscar Monzón Cover design: Antonio Xoubanova @antoniom.xoubanova Text layout: Alice Monguzzi @alicemonguzz.i Translation: Emmelene Landon Proofreading: David Guérin, Joshua L. Sigal Light Assistant: Santiago Saizu @santiagosaizu Photographic archive assistant: Diego García @diegogarcia.jpg Color separation: La Troupe @latroupecolectivo Editorial coordination: Miléna Chevillard @milenachvd Publisher: RVB Books, Matthieu Charon, Rémi Faucheux Thanks to Magali Genuite & Fabrice Paineau @fabricepaineau for bringing us together with such great intuition to Rémi, Matthieu and Miléna for the great support and for believing in the project and to our family and friends!!! ——— SUMER is a striking collaboration between photographer Óscar Monzón and writer Arthur Larrue. Bringing image and text together, the book blends a powerful photographic series with a dystopian narrative set in a hyper-connected world-city shaped by highways, flows, and consumer culture. Through the marginal figures of Óscar and Gabrielle, the project explores themes of exclusion, control, and desire. Combining strong visual storytelling with a compelling literary voice, SUMER offers a distinctive and immersive reading experience at the crossroads of photography, fiction, and contemporary social critique. ——— “He would stand at the side of motorways, leaning against a bollard or a metal railing, watching the vehicles follow one another as if they had traced the letters of the same infinite sentence, as if the city of Sumer were a being, as if this being wrote with the incessant flow of car headlights. The lights were his ink. The dark night was his blank page.” Arthur Larrue - Sumer
