The brief was simple: record a flamenco band and dancers — here’s your room, go make it happen.
We started by recording a live demo so the dancers had a track to film to and so I could get the structure in my head.
I had to record single tracks onto an 833, then transfer each one to a Mac running Pro Tools so it could be played back to the next performer with a click. That was the only way to keep everything tight without a proper studio — just a practical workaround that did the job.
Then we recorded each part separately.
Guitar: COS‑11 at the bottom of the bridge (the guitarist showed me a great spot), my homemade S‑12 aimed at the 12th fret, and an Audio‑Technica BP4025 in the same area for a wide stereo field about 12 inches out.
Cajón: COS‑11 in the sound hole (not great worth a shot), S‑12 1 foot back angled toward the floor for low end, and the BP4025 at the front for highs and stereo.
I even tried COS‑11s on the performers for breaths — wild idea, didn’t work.
Dancers: Sennheiser 416 for accuracy and the BP4025 for room and stereo.
Claps: Recorded with a Sennheiser 416. Ideally I would’ve used my S‑12 instead — a 416 in a big room can give you comb‑filtering issues.
The BP4025 stereo mic really made everything feel alive and in the space.

For this Burberry shoot I was limited to a boom only. The 9:16 framing left a lot of headroom, so ideal placement wasn’t possible, and the director wanted a fast turnaround with no lavs. I ran a Sennheiser 416 on a handheld boom, staying right on the edge of frame and locked onto the talent’s mouth. That meant a bit more room tone, which I kept the director and producers updated on throughout.
Crew of about 15 in a very tight space, so everyone held their position. I tucked myself in with my retractable stool, kit clipped in, ready to jump up the moment talent stepped in.

For this shoot I was actually able to put the boom in frame — everything was on green screen, so VFX could paint it out in post once we’d agreed the workflow. It meant I could get super stable, clean audio without having to rely solely on the lav.
Having one minute to mic up and get everything right is always a bit stressful, but knowing what the talent is wearing and having a couple of options ready makes life a lot easier.

🎤Long day recording sound for an ITV dating show with @thisisboesound 🎧. Running the Sound Devices 16-channel Nexus paired with the Scorpio, Icon, and 11 x A10s. I sent the full mix via XLR to @thisisboesound , who recorded extra mics in another room. (I did end up putting the antenna BNC in the back.)
