ART AND INTOXICATION ACC Galerie Weimar . Opening: November 8, 2024, 8:00 p.m. Duration: November 9, 2024 — January 19, 2025 Artists participating in the exhibition: Knut Birkholz (DE|NL), Cassils (CA|US), Beate Geissler/Oliver Sann (DE|US), Lois Hechenblaikner (AT), Norbert W. Hinterberger (AT|DE), Mary Maggic (US|AT), Laura Nitsche (AT), Pierre Pauze (FR), Aura Rosenberg (US|DE), Ashkan Sahihi (IR|US), Robert Seidel (DE) Where art and intoxication come together, it is about essentials, often also about transcendental experiences. For many artists, alcohol and drugs are creative fuel, a lubricant for self-confidence, a way out, an escape into new worlds, to follow longings, to escape from oneself and to gain creative inspiration. What is the relationship between art and artists and alcohol and other intoxicants, how do works of art reflect the world of drugs and intoxication itself? Knut Birkholz ‘s letter “My dear L” documents intoxicating experiences of youth in the GDR as well as the lack of youthful revolutionary enthusiasm in the year of change in 1989. In “As It Is”, Cassils works out his mental state by physically overexerting himself. In “Hopium Economy” , Beate Geissler/Oliver Sann question the meaning of the term “addiction”. Lois Hechenblaikner documents après-ski parties brimming with empty beer barrels. Norbert Hinterberger’s model ruin “Fruits of the Grain - A Temple for the Goddess Demeter!” reflects the metamorphosis from grain to vodka. Mary Maggic ‘s fictional cooking show “Housewives Making Drugs” teaches us to brew our own hormones. Laura Nitsche collects shopping lists and turns them into classic still lifes and garbage life: taming the shopping spree? In Pierre Pauze’s “ Please Love Party”, the synthesis of a laboratory love drug from water and a party takes place. Aura Rosenberg’s “Head Shots” show men apparently caught in ecstasy. In “The Drug Series”, Ashkan Sahihi has test subjects take crack, cocaine, LSD, etc. and documents the reactions. Robert Seidel’s experimental film “HYSTERESIS” intoxicates in order to gain other perspectives
