I've spent the past three months in preproduction, production, and post production for three films. At every stage, I'm reminded again how grueling filmmaking (directing in particular) can be, and that it gets easier with practice. Every project comes with its own challenges and peculiarities. With some, you'll eat dust and stand in the same room with ancestors you haven't met in real life. With others, you'll soar and fly like a master of the wind. The common thing between both types is that if it was meant for you, you'll always come back to it. Never mind what filmmaking used your eye to see. You will be back. For some, it's just work. For me? It's a calling and I'll be there no matter what. - I selected these pictures from frame 2 - 9 just to show you how much pointing, gesturing, and performing I have to do on set. Film directing turns me into a flamingo, dancing and stretching through each set up. On the outside, it would look like that's when I do the most work. But the heaviest of work I do as a director is what happens in my head... in frame 1 and 10. - Also, these pictures are from the set of Adanne, one of the features I directed last year. We're currently in post production. BTS photos by @chuxosakwe - Happy new year and first post of the year, magicians! #womeninfilm #femaledirector #filmdirector #blackgirlmagic✨ #blackdirectors

Sweeping Silence is a documentary short my group members and I made for a class assignment during the documentary Filmmaking course I took last month. It opened my eyes to the possibilities of the kinds of stories that exist around me in everyday life. You might want to look far from you, but around you is a gem waiting to happen. This film is one of such. I was the director, editor, and cinematographer for my group. It was an honor to collaborate with my team members in bringing Mr Hafeez's story to screen. Watch and let me know your thoughts in the comments. Well done to my team members. I pitched a simple idea to @candleshaven and they went for it. Something real. Solid. Something that didn't need a massive crew or budget to shoot. I went to their store with just my phone, a gimbal, and a plan for a clear beginning, middle, and end. But during the edit, I almost fell back into old habits from when I started video editing - trying to force a fast-paced beat just to keep people’s attention. That wasn't the story or the vibe I wanted. So I started again. I swapped the music, moved footage around, slowed the rhythm, and focused on the sound design. I wanted you to feel the process and be immersed in it. Here is what I call "MADE SLOWLY" - It’s only a candle until you see how it’s made... Quietly, intentionally, slowly. Which version do you usually prefer: the high-energy hype edits or a slow-burn story like this? Let me know in the comments. I'm shooting another this weekend. This time, with a crew, actors, and a bit more equipment. I'm so excited. . . . #filmdirector #femaledirector #creativeads #indiefilmmaking #creativedirector

In the spirit of "doing things I haven't done before", I directed and edited an acting reel for @herangelenergy last December. @realhartstudios was our cinematographer. I used to think editing wasn't my thing but after editing a short documentary, brand videos, social media content, random things I don't post, and this reel, I realize I like(???) editing and it's my new source of dopamine. Vivian's reel is the longest duration I've done. I'm working my way up to 5-10 minute shorts, then longer, and longer, till I get to my first feature as an editor. I'm still going to edit brand films/ads. A lot of it. I registered for an editing class happening at the end of this month. I'm ✨excited✨!! Go to the post before this and WATCH VIVIAN!!! #filmdirector #womeninfilm #filmdirector #blackwomeninfilm

The day was July 10, 2021 and I directed my first director-for-hire film. @gailchukwu was my first EP/Producer/Writer. In certain circles, the term "director-for-hire" is sometimes perceived as a not-so-pretty term. If you belong under that category, it often means you're poor and you'd say yes to anything that comes your way and you'll direct nonsense because you're hungry. "Produced, Created/Written and directed by" is often what most (including me) aspire to. There's a clear maintenance of authorship because you created this on paper and now you're directing it till post-production. It's easier, even, to direct what you write because you've stayed long enough in that world. And you have your FREEDOM! Two days ago, when Google Photos reminded me about this day (these reminders are why I still have the app), I smiled, embraced by nostalgia over the memory. When I started directing, it was because I wanted to get into the industry as a writer and I needed to show a produced work. After, I simply wanted to direct what I wrote. Now, I see myself as the clergy that marries the producer, writer/creator, and audience in a multi-person union of happiness. I take my expertise and I create a formula that dares to work. The result? Audiences and producers love what they see. Further result? Producers trust my choices more. Directing a script I didn't write is more difficult but my head was created for this challenge. What a ride it has been! .... Totally random musings.

All Africans Indie Film Festival (AAIFF) 2025 In Partnership with Brixton Film Festival BEST STUDENT FILM – This category celebrates young filmmakers who remind us that talent doesn’t wait for experience, it simply speaks. Student films are where bravery starts: small budgets, big dreams, and a determination to say something real. This year’s winning film stood out for its clarity, its heart, and its ability to turn an ordinary moment into something deeply meaningful. Ladies and gentlemen, the Best Student Film goes to… A Day Called Everyday.

There are many stories associated with winning this award at the @allafricansindiefilmfestival but I'll start with this one. A Day Called Everyday has two versions, a long and a short version. Ask me why. You: Why, director? Me: After shooting for three days in February 2024, we lost the footage and sound files for days 2&3. That's more than half the film gone. Devastated doesn't cover what we felt. The hard drive jumped from one hand to the other but there was little that could be recovered. Months later, I get a call from my producer & lead actor, @i_am_ezo , to find a way forward. Do we reshoot the entire thing oorrrrr???? I have coconut head, so I can't give up. What we ended up doing was what I call MOVIE MAGIC. I spent weeks looking at the disjointed footage we had. Then one day, a light bulb appeared, hovering above my head. I wrote a new script that combined the footage we had with new scenes we needed to shoot. Minimal cast, minimal locations, minimal budget. Added a voice over and notes for sound design inspired by Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. This was for the shorter version. 8 mins. Shot it one year later. For the longer version, which was played at @allafricansindiefilmfestival , I taught myself a masterclass on how to tell a story in multiple ways. This film stretched me. TESTED me!!! We got nominated for four awards: Best Student Film Best Short Film Best Screenplay Best Actor. We won as the Best Student Film! The first time a project tested me like this, it was directing A Psalm For Abigail with @gailchukwu and we won the award for Best Directing. She was my Co-Director on this project and I guess we can call ourselves a winning-team at this point. Reflecting on my journey as a film director, I realize that projects I touch as a director excel. They get noticed. They get awarded and soon, they'll start grossing in the top 1%> globally.

We did it. 🥳🥳🎊 My short film “A DAY CALLED EVERYDAY” was officially selected by @allafricansindiefilmfestival film festival and got nominated… and it actually won an award. I’ve been holding this in for a while because this project truly tested me. We went through two full reshoots. Hard drives crashed. People’s schedules clashed. Everything that could go wrong tried its hardest. But we pushed. We rebuilt. We kept creating. And now—this little film that started as an idea in my head just stood on a festival stage. I’m proud of the work. Proud of my team. Proud of the stubbornness that kept us going when it didn’t make sense to continue. Thank you to everyone who believed in this story. This win means more than I can explain. Directed by @orobosa_ikp @gailchukwu Produced by @i_am_ezo @meyerthefirstt Cast : @i_am_ezo @thekayodejnr @sandrairoegbu @call_mhe_valerie DOP : @uglyfilmmaker
