I’m happy to announce my new artist book Another Roadside Balloon. Riffing on the dry wit of conceptual artist books by the likes of Ed Ruscha, Bruce Nauman, and John Baldessari, Another Roadside Balloon presents a whimsical suite of candy-colored photographs. Made while driving the American highway, these photographs are portraits of the lonely balloons that float like beacons high above car dealerships and RV parks.
Each handmade copy of this accordion-bound artist book is printed on one long continuous sheet of Japanese Kozo mulberry paper, allowing the viewer to either page individually through the sequence or stretch out the folded panorama. The covers are custom stamped in archival ink with an original title design by Shawn Hazen.
Limited to an edition of 75, pick up a copy before they all float away. A perfect gift for Valentine’s Day 🎈 Link in my bio #anotherroadsideballoonbook #eirikjohnson
Photographs from my new artist book Another Roadside Balloon. Limited copies remain. The pages of the book are printed as one long continuous folded sheet that when stretched out, allude to the flags that dangle down from these highway balloons. Images from LEVIATHAN RISING, my recent site-specific photographic and sound-based installation presented within the historic Georgetown Steam Plant in Seattle, Washington. The installation featured three chapters from my ongoing project Leviathan, including a series of large-scale photographic projections in the chapel-like Boiler Room, where coal-fed furnaces heated water from the Duwamish River to power massive steam turbines. #leviathan_rising #eirikjohnson
In honor of Earth Day, three photographs from my book “Sawdust Mountain”, co-published by @aperturefnd & @henryartgallery in 2009. 🌎🐟🌲#earthday #eirikjohnson
“Make Out Tree”, is a unique neon work and part of my PINE series. I thought I would share the tree carving from which the work originates. Every bulbous curve of each word and arrow was incorporated into the hand made glass work. Then each piece was front dipped in opaque black paint so that the pink light would radiate from behind the darken words. Big thanks to @westernneonseattle for their support. I’m excited to share this work in person later this summer again with @koplindelrio at @fosterwhitegallery . Stay tuned for more info.
“A majority of the furniture came from Johnson’s New York apartment, timelessly designed in 1930 by Mies van der Rohe, who created the now iconic daybed specifically for Johnson. The Modernist house was partly responsible for ushering in the International Style into public American consciousness; its architecture is iconic because of its innovative use of glass and its seamless integration into the landscape—now a commonplace practice in the design of residential properties. Today, the building exists as a pavilion for public viewing of the surrounding landscape, with all of the original furniture and interiors exactly intact; the home appears as if it was designed just yesterday. The verdant images below were captured by American photographer Eirik Johnson, and offer a nuanced look at the relaxed life the pair appeared to live behind glass.“ - @ignant

"Jason M. Thornberry’s chapbook takes on unsavory landlords, dental extractions, benevolent crows, cigar-chomping developers, and a poet who brings his broken poem to a mechanic. It may seem like a lot of ground to cover, but this varied and deft collection is bound together with humor, grace, and a healthy dose of the absurd."
