🚨🚨 GIG TOMORROW 🚨🚨 Less than 24 hours to go until Vermilion make their concert debut, with special guest @allylondonmusic . We have been working so hard on this concert and can’t wait to bring it to Little Nan’s 2.0 in Deptford for @smallroomarts ! The programme is mostly brand new music by Vermilion co-founders @oran_johnson and @jontylefroywatt written especially for the group. You can expect to hear music that blends classical composition with pop and rock influences in this daring and eclectic programme. The song in this video is called ‘A Question’, and it’s the first in a cycle called Four Garden Songs by @jontylefroywatt . They set beautiful words by poet @lizlefroy and draw on themes of nature, nostalgia, and the wistful contemplation of the future. Tickets are available from Small Room Arts. We are incredibly excited to be playing at @smallroomarts on Wednesday with our newly formed group, Vermilion! Vermilion is a project that’s all about combining our classical training with our rock and pop influences. We write and perform music that features glitchy beats, guitar riffs, and introspective atmospheres. This is a short clip from a rehearsal of ‘Bloom’, a piece by the wonderful @oran_johnson that we’ll be debuting. Vermilion’s other founding member is @jontylefroywatt , and we will be performing some of his brand new songs. 🚨ARTIST SPOTLIGHT🚨 Introducing the first ensemble joining us in just under a week’s time - Triangulum (@triangulum.music )! Featuring Connor Chambers (@cg_chambers ) on vibraphone, small room alum Oran Johnson (@oran_johnson ) on electric guitar, and Ben Mason (@b.maisonn ) on clarinets, they’ll be performing some works by Chick Corea, Jan Freidlin, and some original works from Johnson as well! Read more about Triangulum below!! Triangulum are a new group comprising of clarinet, vibraphone, and electric guitar, performing both new music and original arrangements. The ensemble’s unconventional instrumentation allows the group to explore a broad range of repertoire, drawing on a mix of contemporary classical, minimalism, and jazz. As individuals they are all established performing/composing professionals working around the UK and Europe with experience spanning across the orchestral, contemporary, collaborative and chamber music scenes. Collectively they boast a healthy roster as freelancers, working with ensembles such as English National Ballet, Philharmonia Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Glyndebourne Touring Opera, and Riot Ensemble. 'In each of my five hearts I chant my desire...' One of my favourite projects of 2025 was composing 'I Wish For' for @fawnakate 's incredible installation 'A Worm Witual', and you can now listen to the whole piece on SoundCloud (link in bio). In the basement of @wiltonwaydeliandwines , as part of @hackneyartweek , visitors experienced the installation one at a time and were invited to ask for a wish by copying out a text, stitching into a canvas, and then leaving an offering to the stone circle worm. The music, built from layering, stretching and reversing piano and vocal recordings (with the beautiful voice of @megsjholch ), played on loop in the space. This was one of the most spontaneous and intuitive pieces that I've written, completing it in about a week, inspired and guided by Katie's description of her vision and the atmosphere she wanted to create. My performance of 'Landscapes' is now online! This was the first time I've played this piece live since writing it and releasing it as an EP in 2023, and it was a total pleasure to do so at @smallroomarts in October, alongside fantastic sets by @greening.wav and @alexgroves_ . 'Murmurations' is about flying through the air together, in constant motion, creating sweeping shapes across the sky. The recording of the premiere of my violin duet, 'Murmurations', is now on SoundCloud - you can listen to the whole thing via the link in my bio! Performed wonderfully by the INCREDIBLE @zea.hunt and @_elizanagle (so so grateful to both of you!) on the 8th November 2025 at St Cuthbert's Church, Clungunford, Shropshire, at a concert organised by @jontylefroywatt and myself. This is a piece I wrote and rewrote very gradually over 18 months, and so it meant so much to finally hear it played, and I'm so happy to now be able to share it online. Introducing our second artist joining us for 2 October, Oran Johnson (@oran_johnson )!! Everybody clap, swipe to watch some excerpts from Oran, then proceed to read more about Oran below 👇 Oran Johnson is a composer and electric guitarist who is influenced by an eclectic variety of music. His work draws on his classical training, his years of gigging with various rock bands, and his love of electronic styles such as trip hop and ambient music.  In 2023 Oran released ‘Landscapes’, an EP of six pieces for electric guitar that bring together different aspects of his musical life, influenced as much by his experiences of playing in bands as his experiences of composing for classical ensembles. Each track presents a different atmosphere, creating a journey through energetic rhythms, ambient moods and distorted textures. They also each feature a different way of playing the guitar, from using a cello bow to rubbing the strings with a coin. Oran has also written orchestral pieces which juxtapose rhythmic riffs with slower, melodic sections; 'Quilt' was premiered in 2023 by the Manson Ensemble, conducted by Geoffrey Paterson, and 'Rupture' was performed in 2025 by Brunel Sinfonia, conducted by Mark Gateshill. He has also created electronic music, such as the piece 'Tear it apart', which features a glitchy sampled drum beat and which was highly commended in the Alan Bush Composition Prize 2022. He has also composed music for films and installations, including for Katie King’s animated short film ‘Made for Duty Overseas’ which has been screened at film festivals across Europe as well as in Mexico and the USA. Oran completed his master’s degree in composition at the Royal Academy of Music where he studied with Edmund Finnis and was supported by a Vaughan Williams Bursary TICKETS IN BIO!!! GO NOW!!! Very excited to have written music for @fawnakate 's installation 'A Worm Witual', which opens tomorrow at @wiltonwaydeliandwines as part of @hackneyartweek ! The piece that I've created, called 'I Wish For', is an ambient track built from layering, stretching and reversing piano and vocal recordings. It'll be playing on loop in the space while you experience Katie's stunning creation.
