Some stories pause.
Not because theyāre finished,
but because the chapter needs time to breathe.
This year, we turn the page gently.
Back to books that linger, ideas that stretch us,
and conversations that feel like underlining your favourite line twice.
Fingers crossed this is the year the podcast finds its way to you. But while we wait, this space will stay alive with refreshing and thoughtful reflections,
and little reminders of why we fell in love with stories in the first place.
Hereās to becoming š

Day 4 ā Welcome To Lagos
After what seems like an eternity, I believe we are finally approaching Lagos. Weāve had such an interesting ride from the East, filled with drama and lots to sightsee at least for my fourteen year old self. After exiting my hometown, our first major stop was at the popular Onitsha main market, this was where Oga John bought me food to eat; he also allowed me get meat pie and a bottle of Fanta as a snack for the rest of the journey. He ensured to add that these were frivolities that should not be indulged in all the time. I cannot remember Oga Johnās facial expressions softening up since meetimg him, he has a constant frown on his face, I suspect he doesnāt laugh or joke much. I thank him as we wait for the rest of the bus members to return to the bus so we can head out. The market and its associated bus park is buzzing with activity. Iāve lost count of the food vendors selling all manner of food amd drinks. Thereās a noisy bar at a corner with two large speakers bawling the songs of popular Nigerian music artists. One by one members of our bus return, some with their stomachs protruding, a sign of being well fed and others with several types of market wears such as fabrics, a few electronics and other items.
We head out and in no time we are on the iconic Niger Bridge. The water beneath the bridge is intimidating and I wonder the size of the fishes that live deep within them. The sun loses its intensity gradually as we pass through other states such as Delta and Edo.

Day 3 ā Midnight Call
That one minute between 11:59 and midnight can seem like an eternity when youāre young, in love and broke. And itās in those moments that you have unmatched gratitude for initiatives such as midnight calls which provide free calls by some of the nationsā network providers at specific hours of the day.
Tonight isnāt like any other night, itās the night before Chike departs for Lagos with his uncle. Chike is my tall, dark and handsome lover, the one who makes the butterflies in my belly come alive and makes goosebumps appear on my skin when he mistakenly brushes my arm with his fingers. Weāve been seeing each other for a year now and itās been such an amazing experience. We met at Kano market where his uncle runs a textile shop and my father sells aromatic spices. Chike gets me, heās the kind of man I want to bring home as a husband but there are so many complexicities surrounding us. Asides the fact that he is billed to leave Kano in just a few hours, which would mean a world of distance between us, heās Igbo and Iām Hausa and where Iām from, my fatherās word is law over me. Whatās my fatherās law you may ask? That I marry Alhaji Musa Maikari, one of the wealthiest men from our community back home. Heās made an impressive name for himself; he owns multiple shops in Kano, Kaduna and even Abuja. Although a marriage to Alhaji Musa would mean a life of comfort and bliss, it would also mean a life of backwardness and stagnation because he is a man deeply steeped in tradition.
With Chike, I feel my dreams can come alive, he loves when I talk about my desire to become a global speaker, to travel around the world speaking about women's rights, I could even end up as a politician, helping to shape the policies around women, especially those in the North. Alhaji Musa, like my father, would relegate that dream to the kitchen and āza other room.ā

Day 2 ā A New Dawn
I stretched out on our old raffia mat for a few seconds longer; I wanted to savor this moment, possibly the last in a very long time because today is the day Iām heading to the big city. Thatās what my mother calls it with exaggerated effort ābig cityā and she extends her hands wide apart to demonstrate it, but you wonāt believe that our village is much bigger; this is according to my Geography teacher Mr Okoro. He said our village is twice the size of Lagos. Yes that is the city I am moving to. I hear that if you can make it there, you can surely make it anyway else in the world; I know this because I have listened with rapt attention to the stories of the other Nwa Boys that returned home during the Christmas holidays with their masters, they spend long hours painting a picture of a city filled with people, cars and buzzing activities to the admiration of young boys and the beautiful village girls that they themselves have been eyeing. Today is the day, where I become like them and move to Lagos with my master.
The piercing crows from my motherās well tendered cockerels push me back into reality and at that moment she enters the room with a humming sound on her lips. She smiles as she hurries to my side seeing me awake and brings out our worn out stool, and then places it by the raffia mat. I can feel the cool breeze of the morning from our tiny window as the early morning rays flash to reveal the deep creases on my motherās face; theyāre not as a result of old age because Mama is not that old but rather from the harshness of life- orphaned at a young age and widowed with an only child not long after. I sit up and greet her, and she smiles more deeply, a smile filled with reassuring hope. āNwa m, today is the day.ā
