We’ve changed our name! We are proudly OPEN THREADS!!!
Open Threads has been in the works for a little while now. We believe this update to our organization’s name better reflects our spirit and mission as we seek to open new avenues of economic and environmental justice throughout Cleveland.
We have long served a spectrum of people in Cleveland, from local community members needing a helping hand to immigrants from far away lands who sought support as they established a footing along the shore of Lake Erie. We believe in opening our doors to everyone.
Please join us in spreading the exciting news! Drop a memory or hello in our comments and share this post on your story! We’re excited to stitch together this next chapter with you🪡🥳

This afternoon we went out as a team with Becky Aviles, our long time artist collaborator, looking for materials for Parade the Circle. Today’s trip to Open Threads led us on a journey of community, opportunity, and creative curiosity. What an unexpected gem in the middle of Cleveland! Tucked away on a small one-way street, this creative non-profit offers so much more than just the expected. Here you can find sewing education, job skills development, a space of connection, materials at an affordable price, and a mission of sustainability at its core.
As we waltzed through Open Threads, Becky started pulling out bolt after bolt of fabric in all sorts of vibrant colors. With her smile growing, she explained her vision of costumes and accessories to bring her project to life. She’s planning costumes for Latin Social Dance, Latina Image Leadership Program, and her giant puppets. Resulting in costuming for over 30 participants and only 9 weeks to sew!
We were so grateful to have this visit with Becky and Open Threads, supporting local nonprofits just like our own. If you haven’t had the chance to visit Open Threads , we encourage you to go! They’re located at 1370 W 69th St, Cleveland, OH 44102 and you can learn more about them on their instagram @openthreadscle . Go and explore all the possibilities at Open Threads! We hope it excites you, just like it did for us.

It’s been impossible to keep this a secret, but I can finally share that two of my short films have been selected as part of this year’s Cleveland International Film Festival programming, and they highlight people in our community doing some amazing things.
There’s No Place Like Shalom: “Calm in the midst of Chaos.” This is how Ebonie Randle describes Shalom & Tranquility, an urban garden in the neighborhood of Brooklyn Centre in Cleveland, OH. Ebonie is the head gardener at Shalom and lifelong resident of the neighborhood, where she offers gardening lessons, fresh food and a meeting place for her neighbors. What happens when your neighborhood is offered a space to be fed, cared for, and heard? Ebonie invites you into her home and spiritual practice of growing food.
Open Threads: Charles Poindexter never envisioned himself as a teacher. He worked as a truck driver, ran his own fashion design company, and usually outsourced the work part to others. But after taking an eight week course in sewing basics at the community space Open Threads, he realized that he loved the technical side of creating clothes, and wanted to share with others how it shaped the direction of his own life. Poindexter finds that the commonality of creating together opens up space for others who may not have met in the first place.
They will be screening at the Playhouse on April 14th, 7:25pm. I am just so, so excited and I hope to see you there!
Studio light is 🔥🔥🔥 for Wednesday evening membership hours!
