I'll be at @hospitalfield Summer Festival this Saturday as part of the feminist DIY radio collective, open-weather, and the project Year of Weather 🔆☁️ Pop in to learn more and write your weather note to add to the open-weather archive. I'll have audio recordings of analogue weather satellite transmissions received by the antenna we set up on the roof back in March, and a set of special riso prints with some of the weather images we've decoded. I'm giving the posters away for donations to @thamra_org : a food sovereignty project who grow and distribute food in Gaza. Open-weather was at the Open Hardware Summit (@oshwassociation ) in Edinburgh last weekend to share our first open-source hardware project: the Automatic Ground Station, co-developed with @prismspecs 🩵 We learned about DIY reproductive technologies, 3D-printed snails that can sense soil humidity, conservation kits for monitoring insect populations, Quetzal-1 (Guatemala’s first satellite!), educational robots, knitted musical instruments and many more incredibly cool projects and open-source tools! 👻 Happy to be among such good friends like @dealesbello @shortwavecollective @soundarthannah @tinysound @alisonjessicascott 💫 #radio #weather #hamradio #opensource #openweather #noaa #oshwa

Open-weather is a feminist experiment in imaging and imagining the earth and its weather systems using DIY tools. Co-led by designer Soph Dyer and geographer Sasha Engelmann since 2020, open-weather makes artworks, leads inclusive workshops and develops resources on satellite imagery reception and reading. Big news today! 📡 We are announcing a new chapter of open-weather’s collective weather sensing, recording and archiving efforts, at an unprecedented time in the history of environmental data collection and access. ☁️ We invite you to take part in the Year of Weather, our current effort to create a historic record of weather over twelve months when the average global temperature has exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. 🌫️ The Year of Weather unfolds as NOAA publicises plans to decommission 16 environmental datasets, and to discontinue most data services from instruments on NOAA-15, -18 and -19 on 16 June 2025.❗️In response, open-weather is working to support all Automatic Ground Station hosts and volunteer contributors to capture images from NOAA satellites before the 16 June deadline ☔️ We are also proud to launch the Year of Weather map, a living, collective map of planetary weather composed of satellite imagery contributions from DIY satellite ground station operators around the world, made in collaboration with @rctngle and featuring satellite imagery collected by Automatic Ground Station infrastructure co-developed with @prismspecs . Introducing the open-weather Automatic Ground Station project! 🦾 The open-weather Automatic Ground Station (AGS) is an open-source Raspberry Pi-based receiver of Automatic Picture Transmissions from weather satellites NOAA-15, NOAA-18, and NOAA-19. We developed the AGS because manual satellite imagery capture can be time intensive. While still foundational to open-weather, manual reception is not always practical or possible. Over the last year, working in collaboration with artist Grayson Earle @prismspecs , we prototyped, built, and tested AGS and deployed them at over ten locations around the world, from New York to Valparaiso to Phnom Penh. Key to this work is not only the building of technical infrastructure, but crucially, democratising access to knowledge and satellite imagery on earth’s changing weather patterns as the planet warms above 1.5 degrees Celsius. We are so grateful to Grayson who developed the software and designed the hardware of the AGS. Its API was developed by @rctngle . Soph set up the first fully functional AGS system on their balcony in Vienna back in August 2024, and monitored AGS reception in its earliest days. Due to Sasha’s proximity to university 3D printers and infrastructure, the hub of AGS assembly, testing and shipping has been in London. Dispatch from the American Geophysical Union conference in Washington DC where our dear friend and collaborator Bill Liles (NQ6Z) is presenting an open-weather poster! 🛰️ Each year, AGU’s annual meeting, the largest gathering of Earth, climate and space scientists in the world, convenes 25,000+ attendees from 100+ countries to share new and developing research. 🔭 Our poster, titled “Year of Weather: crafting accessible and inclusive resources for NOAA satellite imagery reception in a volunteer network” is displayed in a special session on “Phenomena-Based Educator Training for Deepening Learners’ Engagement in Science”. Thanks for coming and joining! The results of two weeks prototyping ecologies in hunting satellites, clouds and mountains were presented in a 30min participatory play at bat Studiotheater Berlin. On the endless hunt and efforts humans keep on controlling their social, ecological, technological environment. An interdisciplinary course with support by @open_weather opening up critical perspectives in western weather mappings through geo-humanities. We have researched transitional phases of dramaturgies, satellite trajectories, cloud formations, sound and light scapes. For us, it remains central in experimental participatory theatre at @hfs_ernst_busch to question: Who and what is at stake in theatre practices? How can we widen social perspectives through an technological and ecological focus? What do we imagine the audience is achieving? What do we contribute in forming collective practices for critical theatre making? We are pleased to present our third pilot study publication: Weathered Perspectives: Feminist Imagining and Imaging of Earth. In this publication, speculative storytelling weaves through weather satellite transmissions in a dialogue tinged with the feminist meta-practices that run deep beneath @open_weather collective operations. open-weather is a feminist collective that leverages open-source technology and community collaboration to democratise access to weather and climate data. Driven by a DIY/DIWO ethos, open-weather merge artistic practices, science-fiction, workshops, and participatory events to make complex atmospheric data more accessible and meaningful to a broader audience. Open-weather interrogates how satellite technologies influence our perception of weather and climate. This critical approach not only raises awareness about the socio-political aspects, power dynamics and surveillance systems embedded in satellite technologies, but also encourages a more equitable distribution of environmental knowledge. Sharing three new tools! 🪛⚙️⚗️ Over the past year, together with @rctngle , we have been quietly building new infrastructure for NOAA satellite imagery decoding, sharing and archiving. We are excited to share these tools with you! First, a new and improved version of ‘open-weather apt’ 🛰️ Open-weather apt is, to our knowledge, the only public, maintained, browser-based decoder for Automatic Picture Transmissions (APT) from satellites NOAA-19, NOAA-18 and NOAA-15. It was developed by @open_weather with @prismspecs , @rctngle and Bill Liles NQ6Z to improve access to satellite signal decoding for all practitioners. We are so proud of the improved accuracy of the decoder, the fact that you can upload a WAV of any sample rate, and the additional ways to analyse images. Try it out via the ‘Decode’ tab on our website. Second, our redesigned Public Archive 👩🏽‍💻 The open-weather Public Archive is now free of Google Sheets – it is now hosted on Greenhost and supported by servers powered with renewable energy. The new archive is more visually navigable, and enables filtering by ‘satellite’, ‘ground station operator’ and ‘nowcast’. You can also ‘Download Public Archive’ data (however please consult our Data MOU for any uses of the data). Finally, our Contributor Form 📖 Our new Contributor Form is hosted on Greenhost and free from Google. The form automatically calculates UTC time from local time, therefore not privileging those who live closer to the prime meridian, and it streamlines upload of WAV files and photos. The Public Archive and Contributor form were designed and developed in close collaboration with @rctngle . Part 2/4 of @lotti_jones weather notes (open-weather takeover) Grief, decay, endings. These words often quiver through my body when I think about ‘climate’. ‘’Climate breakdown’’ was used by Janez Lenarčič, the EU’s crisis management commissioner, to describe the recent ravages of Storm Boris and wildfires in Portugal. It is a fear-laden phrase expressing how humans are at the root of unprecedented change. What unravelling of our physical and social infrastructures will follow? The creative geographers Ruth Raynor and Charlotte Veal remind me that extreme weather events such as Storm Boris extend beyond one spectacular moment. The pixels in our Leipzig workshop satellite transmissions show climate-changed clouds which are ‘thick with time’; entangled with centuries of colonialism and capitalism which fuel climate collapse. I witness death and endings all around me at my home in north Wales: loss of people, the creaking decay of slate mining infrastructures, and the constant scream of tractors uprooting trees to make space for ‘productive’ farmland. Some endings are fast, some are slow, some are gentle, some are geographically distant and absorbed through technologies. In truth, I often feel numb or ambivalent about all these endings. Sometimes they hurt deeply. How to collectively feel into these different forms of grief, death, and endings? How can we hold this grief while also making space for joy?
