Zebra display is an exposure monitoring tool used in videography and cinematography. It overlays striped patterns on areas of the image that reach specific brightness levels measured in IRE.
When zebra stripes appear, highlights are approaching overexposure. This allows accurate exposure control directly in camera. Zebra display is commonly used for skin tones, skies, white clothing, and reflective surfaces. Many filmmakers set zebras around 70 IRE for skin tones and near 100 IRE to prevent highlight clipping.
During filming, zebra display helps manage aperture, shutter speed, ISO, ND filters, white balance, lighting ratios, and in camera exposure settings. It is essential for run and gun shooting, outdoor cinematography, interviews, documentary filmmaking, and controlled studio setups.
Correct exposure improves post production and editing. It preserves dynamic range, reduces noise, and supports color correction, color grading, LUT workflows, and timeline adjustments in DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, and AE. Zebra display is especially valuable when shooting log profiles, flat profiles, cinematic B roll, slow motion, and narrative footage.
