I came in as a girl,
trying to step beyond the nest at home,
learning how to stand on my own.
The path was never easy
it was filled with challenges I never saw coming.
I lost my mom in my second year of college,
a pain that changed me in ways words can’t hold.
Two years later, I lost my cousin too,
and in between it all,
my body fought battles of its own
with sickle cell that came and went without warning.
No one tells you how deeply loss can shape you,
how it can shift who you are
until one day you look in the mirror
and barely recognize yourself.
There was once someone
you could look at and see pure joy,
a light so bright it felt unshakable
but in the blink of an eye,
that light began to fade.
There were long nights and early mornings,
books open when my heart felt closed,
and a journey that once felt so far away
was closer than I ever realized
right at my fingertips the whole time.
Friendships changed. Hearts broke.
Pieces of me were tested,
but none of it was wasted.
Because everything I went through
was building me into her
the woman I am today.🤍🥹
