When I first read Laut Bercerita as a freshman in college, I didn’t know a book could quietly rearrange the way I see the world. It taught me that history isn’t just something we memorize — it’s something that shapes how we think, how we question power, how we grow into who we are, and how fiercely we choose to stand for what we believe in.
Ever since I closed the last page of Laut Bercerita by Leila S. Chudori, I’ve been waiting for its film adaptation — constantly wondering when it would finally arrive.
And now, that moment feels real. The feature-length adaptation is on its way, and I truly believe it will carry hope for this generation — especially in times when Indonesia doesn’t feel entirely okay. I hope it opens more eyes, too. Not everyone realizes that nearly 30 years ago, this country carried a history that still echoes today.
Today, I’m grateful to have watched the very first teaser and to have shared a space with the novelist and screenwriter, the director, the cast, and the crew behind this film.
