DOLLY is a short film, meticulously composed like the still lives from the old masters, but filmed with the cinematic approach of contemporary Hollywood: A character study and chamber play realized through the excessive staging of a nocturnal car ride and rendered in stylized film noir aesthetics. The elusive narrative unfolds through subtle, forensic details in costume and backdrop, immersive sound design and minimal acting—carefully framing an anonymous protagonist, while coquetting with niche and mainstream references from the film industry.
Corresponding prints—presented alongside the film—echo the language of commercial cinema while asserting themselves as autonomous works. Distressed to don as aged memorabilia or vintage production stills, each print has undergone a deliberate and individual process of visual degradation: a faux-patina treatment that mimics the aura of lost cinema and manufactured memory. Functioning as a mise en abyme, they extend and refract the film’s aesthetic logic, reflecting the film back on itself. Together, film and print form a single conceptual body—each birthing and contextualizing the other.
DOLLY is the first collaboration between Julian-Jakob Kneer, Fritz Schiffers, and Lukas Stöver.

„Where the I participates in the spoiling of itself we call this self preservation. When the I is the casualty, and that casualty is lost to its preferences, it recuses itself and calls it a compulsion to finish the thing. A general law is to rely on the humor of the thing, to name it simply a gratifying interaction. To seek the one to spoil the simpleton the I hopes it truly isn’t. But does the I not possess the requisite heft. We were once advised it’s the thing we do and what only we can do, it’s a sport and it’s our duty as those who can handle the swinish deviance of the thing. They weren’t lying. Im-mediately one perceives the bothness of it, something that is done under public discretion and with every intention of dedicating it to the non-audience that wouldn’t piss on the I if it burst into flames.
The I turns the bothness into a marketing tool to those who would sooner encourage it into a damp room and watch out the sides of their mouths as it gets off on itself. That’s what happened when we still lived in Paris. The I calls it an exteriorisation.
The bothness is the necessary tool I’ll discard but I’ll keep the egg.“
