Join opaque collective for our first event of the year. Based on the liberatory practice of Sol Davis (@partybus.sol ) and Amanda Zhou (@ancientpalimpsest ) titled “breaking is/freeing/broken is/fredom/i am not/broken i am free”, this event will involve hands-on collaborative art making. Please bring items that you no longer need. Examples of such items include: old clothing, food wrappers, cans, letters, book pages, newspaper, plastic bags, jewelry, CDs, etc. In addition to this activity, we will be having a conversation about sustainable art practices and planning out various ways artists can support each other and create infrastructure to be self-sustaining. This in-person event is an opportunity to reimagine the arts economy in a way that best supports Chicago artists and protects our work. During this event, we will be serving light refreshments and bites. Join us for at Fourtunehouse Art Center at 4410 S Cottage Grove, Chicago, IL, 60653 from 5 - 8 PM. RSVP link in bio. We hope to see you there! **reposted due to spelling error!

very honored to have work up the Black Juried Exhibition at the Museum of Science and Industry! this is my first group exhibition in chicago since being home and I feel so excited to be sharing work with the city that fuels so much of my practice. there are so many talented artists in the show, it will truly be something special. the show opens next week in on January 19th and closes April 19th. i hope to see y’all there 🌟 the image being exhibited is titled “Dedicated To”, featuring my mom. braiding is a sacred practice that is rooted in fugitivity, world-making, and self-preservation. braiding is a reminder that we have been practicing freedom and self-naming, despite how the world tries to undermine the existence of black folk, especially black women. the tree and braids in this image immediately call to roots being planted. but beyond that, trees have underground networks. when one tree is under attack, the tree alerts their neighbors, letting them know to prepare. once the neighboring trees are notified, they begin to harvest their nutrients to share with the affected tree. it would be wise to take a lesson or two from a being as wise and experienced as them.
