It’s a given that when a couple separates, it’s rough on the kids (and on the parents). What I wasn’t prepared for is how hard it is to lose your cat to a separation.

On one hand it’s divine, so many cats everywhere. But it also heartbreaking, so many strays - respected and more or less fed, but in obvious need of care. I avoid touching them, I feel like a coward, betraying my own kind.

For most of my life my father called me Poussy Cat and I called him Papa Cat. He’s been gone for a few years now, and the words have nowhere to go. I can see why it might have sounded odd to an outsider. I miss not having noticed.

At one point in my life, “Cat Diva” was my actual job title — taking care of hundreds of them (not all at once, breathe). Pre-iPhone, so I have almost nothing to show for it. Lucky for everyone, because in the iPhone age I’ve somehow accumulated over 3K.

There was already a cat when I arrived into this world, I mean a cat at the house. His name was Tasch (and no, not the one in the photo). My father used to tell the story how every time I saw a cat in the street I’d point and say “Tasch!”.
