Vailimia spider
Exactly four setae on the head like a spike hair cut and long long legs for any Salticidae I know.

Born to rule - Built to survive!
They might look cute and curious now, but this cub is already showing the confidence of a true apex predator. Standing tall on the rocks and keeping watch over the territory.

Every migratory journey depends on something fragile.
A wetland. A forest patch. A safe place to rest.
Migratory birds travel across countries and oceans, relying on a connected chain of habitats to survive. But when even one stopover disappears, the impact travels across the entire flyway.
Today, we revisit an important conversation with Nikhil Devasar and Amrit Govinda Menon on why protecting habitats is critical to keeping migration alive.
A short clip from the OM SYSTEM × Wildlife Trust of India podcast.

A burst of Himalayan spring — where crimson rhododendrons glow with melting frost, and a tiny jewel pauses for a sip of nectar.
The fire-tailed sunbird seemed almost unreal against the blooms, its long tail flowing like a brushstroke through the forest. Moments like these remind you how perfectly mountain life is woven together — flowers, birds, snow, and silence.
In the high Himalaya, rhododendrons are more than just flowers. They are lifelines for pollinators emerging in the cold mountain spring, painting entire valleys in shades of red while feeding birds like this dazzling male.

Grey Crowned Crane | Balearica Regulorum
--Distinctive Appearance--
The Grey Crowned Crane is easily identified by its unique "punk-rock" aesthetic:
The Crown: A stiff spray of golden-yellow feathers atop the head.
The Face: White cheeks with a red patch above, and a bright red gular sac (wattle) hanging under the chin, which they inflate to make booming calls.
The Body: Primarily pearl-grey plumage with black and white wings.
--Habitat and Distribution--
Unlike many other cranes, this species is found in sub-Saharan Africa, specifically in eastern and southern regions (from Kenya and Uganda down to South Africa).
They prefer a mix of wetlands for breeding and open grasslands for foraging.
Unique Trait: They are one of only two crane species capable of perching in trees, thanks to a long hind toe that can grasp branches.
--Behavior and Diet--
These birds are highly social and are known for their spectacular displays.
The Dance: Their courtship involves bowing, jumping, and "running" with wings spread. While it's used for mating, younger birds often dance just for the fun of it or to socialise.
Diet: They are generalist omnivores. They eat insects, lizards, frogs, seeds, and grain. They are often seen walking near cattle, snatching up bugs disturbed by the livestock.
Monogamy: They usually mate for life.
--Why Are They Endangered?--
Despite their beauty, their population has declined by over 50% in the last few decades. The primary threats include:
Habitat Loss: Drainage of wetlands for agriculture.
Illegal Trade: High demand for them as "ornamental" pets.
Human Conflict: Poisoning by farmers who see them as crop pests.
Note: If you ever see a crane in the wild, its "booming" call can be heard from miles away. This sound is amplified by their extra-long trachea, which coils inside their chest.
