يُعدّ الضبع المخطط من أندر وأكثر الكائنات البرية غموضًا في سلطنة عُمان، وهو الأصغر — والأكثر خجلاً — بين أفراد فصيلته.
يجوب الجبال الوعرة والصحارى الواسعة، ويلعب هذا الكائن الذي يساء فهمه دورًا بيئيًا بالغ الأهمية. فبصفته من الكائنات القمّامة، يساهم بصمت في تنظيف البيئة والحفاظ على توازنها.
