Cheryl Bennett doesnât follow politics. But when her colleague said he was standing in local elections, she agreed to help deliver leaflets.
Within days, doorbell video footage was circulating online, in which Cheryl could be seen calling prospective voters âf***ing P*kisâ.
Cheryl had never said such words, but wasnât sure anyone believed her.
After being posted by an independent candidate for West Midlands mayor - âTikTok lawyerâ Akhmed Yakoob - the deepfake went viral, receiving over two million views across TikTok, Facebook and X.
Cheryl was sent death threats. Police were sent to her house to arrest her. She was forced into hiding. Her career as a PE teacher was put on hold. And, even after the video was proven to be an AI distortion, she is still feeling the consequences years later.

Absolutely loved #CaliforniaSchemin - a funny, fast-paced, endearing British film of the kind we supposedly donât make anymore. Two great young actors playing the leads too.
Itâs the incredible true story of two white teenagers from Dundee who fake American accents in order to get signed as hip-hop stars in a London record industry that is looking for the next Eminem but cannot abide their Scottishness.
Itâs a great portrayal of both the music industry of the noughties, and I can say, of what itâs like being in a double-act as well - having a shared experience between two different personalities.
Nine years ago, I interviewed Gavin Bain - whose story the film is based on - for The Modern Mann, and weâve just re-released it on our feed so you can hear it again. The real tale involved a bit more death, and was obviously a bit less Hollywood-linear, but the spirit of his plucky adventures remains intact!
